ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia Football held its first practice of the fall on Thursday and DawgsHQ was on hand. Jake Rowe shared with you our observations from the 15+ minutes media was allowed to take things in. Below we give you a look at what we saw in the visual form.

Georgia quarterbacks – Carson Beck, Brock Vandagriff, Gunner Stockton, Jackson Muschamp

Georgia has a quarterback competition on its hands going into preseason practice. Carson Beck and Brock Vandagriff both received reps with the first team this spring, and while Beck looked better during the spring game, this thing is far from decided.

Beck and Vandagriff aren’t the only two quarterbacks in the room. Gunner Stockton was highly touted coming out of high school and holds numerous records in the state of Georgia. He might not be a big part of this year’s competition, but Stockton could be the future for the Bulldogs.

Brock Bowers, Georgia tight ends

Everyone knows what Brock Bowers brings to the table. He has led Georgia in receiving each of the last two seasons. How about the other Bulldog tight ends though? Well, Todd Hartley had them working on blocking – something that’s much needed given the departure of Darnell Washington for the NFL after last season.

Georgia inside linebackers – Jamon Dumas-Johnson, Jalon Walker, CJ Allen

This time last year, Jamon Dumas-Johnson was in a position where he was being asked to step into a starters spot. Finishing second on the team in tackles, he did so well as a sophomore. Look for Dumas-Johnson to take another jump forward as a junior considering he knows what’s expected of him.

Georgia has built its reputation as ‘LBU,’ especially under the guidance of Glenn Schumann. A pair of players Schumann recruited in the past two classes – Jalon Walker and CJ Allen – were showing off what they’ve got on Thursday morning. With Smael Mondon nursing a foot injury he suffered in the spring, it’s even more important for these younger linebackers to be ready to roll.

Georgia wide receivers – Dominic Lovett, Ladd McConkey, Dillon Bell, Arian Smith, Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint

Pictured above are a pair of players that finished either first or second for their respective SEC squads last season. Missouri transfer Dominic Lovett is an exciting addition to an already deep group of Georgia receivers while the return of Ladd McConkey certainly was welcomed in Athens.

That depth of the receiver room is due to guys like Dillon Bell, Arian Smith and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint. All bring special skills to the table, whether that’s speed, versatility or blocking ability. Lovett and McConkey might be the top two pass catchers in Bryan McClendon’s receiver room, but Bell, Smith and Rosemy-Jacksaint are going to be major contributors in their own ways.

Georgia coordinators – Glenn Schumann, Mike Bobo

Kirby Smart has talked about the continuity on his coaching staff already this offseason, and the coordinators give a good picture of what that looks like. On one hand, you’ve got Glenn Schumann who was a person of interest for teams at all levels as a defensive coordinator. On the other, Mike Bobo – who served as an offensive analyst – steps into the offensive coordinator’s role previously held by Todd Monken (and Bobo almost a decade ago!).

Georgia outside linebackers – Chaz Chambliss, Marvin Jones Jr, Damon Wilson, Sam M’Pemba, Darris Smith, CJ Madden

Chaz Chambliss and Marvin Jones Jr. were asked to do more than they might have expected last year down the stretch when Nolan Smith went down. Add to that Robert Beal battling bumps and bruises, and these two got their fair share of experience. Now with both Smith and Beal off to the NFL, it’s their turn to shine.

Georgia also addressed its need of depth at outside linebacker on the recruiting trail. Damon Wilson and Sam M’Pemba were each top-10 EDGE prospects in the Class of 2023 and arrived in Athens for spring practice. Already having their feet wet, both were active participants on the first day of fall camp.

CJ Madden (Photo: Palmer Thombs / DawgsHQ)

We’ve shown the old and we’ve shown the new. Somewhere in between are Darris Smith and CJ Madden, neither of whom played a big role last season but both of whom are more than capable of doing so. Again, with outside linebackers being forced to step up, these guys are as good of options as any.

UGA running back Kendall Milton

Kendall Milton and the Georgia running backs were working on catching the ball out of the backfield on Thursday. Last year, Kenny McIntosh finished among the Bulldogs’ top five receivers. With him gone, it’ll be important for another back to step into that role.

Georgia defensive linemen – Mykel Williams, Zion Logue, Christen Miller

Mykel Williams is making his way back from an injury that ended his spring. His classmate, Christen Miller, could be one of the names to watch this season – especially with the likes of Jalen Carter and Bear Alexander gone on the interior. Veteran Zion Logue, Nazir Stackhouse and Warren Brinson are going to be counted on, but Georgia likes to rotate and will need to find more players to be a part of that plan.

Georgia defensive backs – Javon Bullard, Joenel Aguero, Malaki Starks, Daniel Harris, Chris Peal

Georgia loses consensus All-American Christopher Smith at safety after he manned the spot for the better part of the last three seasons. While Malaki Starks returns, the Bulldogs are looking to move Javon Bullard there in hopes that Tykee Smith and Joenel Aguero can hold their own at STAR.

Georgia is going to go out and address the secondary every year on the recruiting trail. It’s a position where you can seemingly never have enough. After Aguero, AJ Harris and Justyn Rhett enrolled in the spring, Daniel Harris, Chris Peal and Kyron Jones joined them this summer for more bodies in the room.
