Welcome aboard Raylen Wilson. One of the nation’s best linebackers in the country has been committed to Georgia since the summer but made things official on Wednesday and will be a Bulldog next fall.

Wilson, the No. 49 overall player and No. 3 linebacker according to the On3 Consensus, was named the 2021 All-Big Bend Defensive Player of the Year his junior season after leading Lincoln (Tallahassee, Fla.) with 139 tackles including 16 for loss and five sacks. He also had 380 yards on kick returns and a score there touting his “do anything” ability on the field.

“I’m fast and big so I can really do anything on the field,” Wilson told the Tallahassee Democrat. “When you’ve got those tools and the mindset I have, you can really accomplish anything.”

Wilson followed up his big junior season with a strong senior season too. He was a finalist for the high school version of the Butkus Award which goes to the nation’s top linebacker. MaxPreps has him with 120 tackles including 20 tackles for loss, 11 of which were sacks, in 11 games. He also added 25 yards and three scores on offense as Lincoln fell in the first round of the Florida playoffs.

“One of the more athletic linebackers in the 2023 cycle who looks to be an ascending prospect after continued physical development,” On3 Director of Scouting Charles Power wrote about Wilson. “Measured around 6-foot-1.5, 215 pounds prior to his senior season. Grew over an inch and added over 10 pounds during his junior season. Also saw improvement on the track, cutting several hundredths off his 100-meter time running a personal best 10.91 mark during the spring. Flashes that top end speed on the field, where he is an eraser in space with sideline-to-sideline ability. Excels in pursuit where he shows the ability to close very quickly. Can track down plays from the other side of the field. A natural in space and shows the ability to cover. Often plays in the box and has experience reading and reacting as a run defender. A high volume tackler with 139 tackles and 16 tackles for loss as a junior. Physical in taking on blocks. Looks to have improved his play strength a bit, but will need to continue progressing in that regard. Father was a wide receiver in the NFL for five seasons and has several siblings who were high level college athletes. Younger for the class, not turning 18 years-old until the July before his freshman season in college.”

His “Reminds Us Of” NFL comparison certainly won’t be one Georgia fans will complain about. On3, who is highest on Wilson of any major recruiting service having him at No. 28 overall and as the No. 2 linebacker in the country, says Wilson is the next coming of former Bulldog Roquan Smith. And fans won’t have to wait too long to see Wilson in red and black either. He’ll be on campus going through drills with the team this spring. In fact, he’s already with the Bulldogs as they prepare to play Ohio State in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on December 31st. He and eight other early enrollees are able to practice in Athens before the Bulldogs break for Christmas and head to Atlanta on December 26th.
