Glenn Schumann returning to Georgia after interview with Eagles
Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann is set to be in Athens again for 2023. The news comes on the heels of him interviewing for the same position with the Philadelphia Eagles. Chris Low of ESPN was first to report, and DawgsHQ has confirmed.
Schumann, who also coaches the inside linebackers, was promoted to co-defensive coordinator prior to the 2022 season and after the departure of Dan Lanning to Oregon. Sharing the title with Will Muschamp, Schumann was responsible for calling the plays.
Georgia already lost one assistant to the NFL this offseason, but as things stand, it’s the only departure from their staff. Todd Monken took the offensive coordinator position with the Baltimore Ravens and will be replaced by Mike Bobo. The other nine on-field assistants from 2022 all return: Dell McGee (RB), Bryan McClendon (WR), Todd Hartley (TE) and Stacey Searels (OL) on offense plus the entire defense staff of Tray Scott (DL), Schumann (ILB), Chidera Uzo-Diribe (OLB), Fran Brown (DB) and Muschamp (DB).
Schumann has been at Georgia since 2016, coming on with Kirby Smart’s first staff. Prior to that, Schumann spent eight seasons at Alabama including two as the Director of Player Development and Associate Director of Player Personnel. Despite not being an on-field coach, Schumann is said to have been a big part of the defensive game planning for the Crimson Tide alongside Smart and Nick Saban.

Schumann has had his fair share of success at Georgia too. He’s coached a pair of Butkus Award winners, Roquan Smith (2017) and Nakobe Dean (2021), while also dominating on the recruiting trail. Georgia just signed three of the nation’s top 10 linebackers in the country including Raylen Wilson, On3’s No. 1 linebacker.
“I think when we had an opportunity to hire him as coordinator, I knew he was going to do a great job,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said about Schumann after his hiring as the co-coordinator. “Schumann was here at that time as well, and he and Schumann were really neck and neck the whole time and both took on responsibilities then. Dan would be the first to tell you he never would’ve had the success here he had if not for Glenn Schumann. That’s what made the transition easier when Dan left. I felt comfortable Glenn would be able to take it over along with Will. It’s always great when you have two guys that know the system and two guys that can share that responsibility.”
Georgia begins spring practice in less than a month on March 14th. Then Kirby Smart and company will put the players through 15 practice sessions including three scrimmages over the course of 30 days. The last of those scrimmages takes the form of a spring game for fans to see at G-Day on April 15th.
