To call this season anything but an abject failure for Georgia basketball would seem misplaced.

The Dawgs have managed to set a record for losses in the program, as well as in the conference, finishing the regular season with a paltry six wins against twenty-five losses.

Additionally, controversy has surrounded the program, with a locker room altercation leading to the suspension and subsequent firing of an assistant coach.

As such, it’s no surprise that folks are expecting the ax to fall on head coach Tom Crean after the conclusion of Georgia’s SEC tournament. Georgia, the last place, No. 14 seed in the conference tournament, is scheduled to face No. 11 seed Vanderbilt at 8 P.M. on Wednesday on SEC Network.

Crean, who’s been with the program for four seasons, currently sits at a 47-74 win-loss record in his Georgia tenure and will likely receive a buy-out for the remaining two years on his contract. The anticipated buy-out falls to 3.2 million dollars at the conclusion of Georgia’s season.

Possible replacements for Georgia basketball becoming clear?

According to a report from Chip Towers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, four candidates are expected to be potential frontrunners for the anticipated vacancy — Xavier associate head coach Jonas Hayes, Cleveland State head coach Dennis Gates, Wake Forest head coach Steve Forbes and USC head coach Andy Enfield.

Pete Thamel of ESPN reported that Forbes and Wake Forest agreed to a long-term contract extension on Monday.

Of the aforementioned, Dawg fans would likely be most familiar with Jonas Hayes, a member of the Georgia team from 2001 through 2004 and a member of the Georgia basketball coaching staff from 2012 until 2018.

Per his biography on Xavier Athletics, “in Georgia’s 11 combined seasons with Hayes as a player or member of the staff, the Bulldogs earned seven postseason bids, including four of his last five seasons. Georgia posted three consecutive 20-win finishes in Hayes’ first three seasons as an assistant, just the second time in 112 seasons of play the Bulldogs have accomplished that feat.”
