SEC Championship Game matchup set for Georgia-Alabama showdown
The 2023 SEC Championship Game is set. Georgia will take on Alabama come December 2nd in Atlanta with the conference title on the line. Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide took care of business against Kentucky in Lexington on Saturday to clinch the Western Division while the East is over before Georgia even kicks off with Missouri’s win over Tennessee.
It’s the fourth matchup between the Bulldogs and Crimson Tide in Atlanta for the SEC Championship. Each of the previous three (2012, 2018, 2021) have come Alabama’s way including a pair with Kirby Smart at the helm as head coach for Georgia. However, UGA won the last meeting, a second during the 2021 season, in the National Championship Game to claim its first title in 41 years.
Georgia also won its last SEC Championship Game, making it last season and beating LSU in a shootout, 50-30. Previously Georgia appearances in the title game include: 2002 (30-3 win over Arkansas), 2003 (34-13 loss to LSU), 2005 (34-14 win over LSU), 2011 (42-10 loss to LSU), 2012 (32-28 loss to Alabama), 2017 (28-7 win over Auburn), 2018 (35-28 loss to Alabama), 2019 (37-10 loss to LSU), 2021 (41-24 loss to Alabama) and 2022 (50-30 win over LSU).
