SEC Championship may give Georgia a CFP tone-setter in Atlanta

The SEC Championship game is a perfect continuation of Georgia’s very ‘Georgia’ season. The Dawgs started it in Mercedes-Benz Stadium with a win over Oregon.

Then they continued their run all the way through an unblemished regular season, which culminated with a home win over rival Georgia Tech.

The Peach State regular season slate ended there, but the Georgia vibes do not on our latest episode of The Georgia Show.

With a win in the SEC Championship over LSU, #1-Georgia should have its pick to play its College Football Playoff Semifinal in Atlanta as well, once again at the Benz for the third time this year.

To sum it all up, Georgia – LSU gives the Dawgs a chance to not only win the SEC Championship for the first time since 2017.

As we discussed on The Georgia Show (Apple / Spotify / YouTube), this game could give Georgia yet another opportunity to flood Mercedes-Benz Stadium with barking, raving Dawgs fans.

They’ve seen Kirby Smart’s program defend its home state turf well this season.

But they haven’t seen it win a SEC Championship since 2017.

Win, and theoretically, you’re back in on New Year’s Eve.

Could Georgia still be at the mercy of the CFP Committee, even with a SEC Championship win over LSU?

Well, we talked about that, too.

Even with everything I just said to tee up this piece, there’s still some chatter about whether or not the Dawgs can retain their current number-one spot come selection Sunday.

Number-two Michigan just gobbled up number-five Ohio State on the Buckeyes’ home turf.

Suddenly, the Wolverines’ best wins (#5 Buckeyes, #8 Penn State) look a little better than Georgia’s best wins (#7 Tennessee, #15 Oregon).

Beyond that – which potential CFP matchup should scare Georgia the most – Michigan, Southern Cal with Heisman-Trophy-favorite Caleb Williams, or even TCU?

A couple members of our crew also pontificated as to whether or not Kirby Smart may prefer to play that semifinal game at the other spot – The Fiesta Bowl in Phoenix.

Would Smart actually see it as a benefit for his team to hit the road, shake off the monotony of playing in Georgia again, and enjoy a change of scenery?

I am inclined to say that wouldn’t be his final answer, if he had to pick ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’ style.

No matter how conference championship weekend shakes out, Georgia is clearly in rare air when this could to be the Dawgs’ biggest concern heading out of the SEC Championship, and into the CFP.

If Georgia is just ‘in a shell’ to rest up and keep things off tape for the postseason, is that actually a wise choice?
