Series Primer: Georgia set to host No. 11 Auburn over weekend

Another weekend, another big series stands in front of Georgia’s (25-2, 5-1 SEC) baseball team. The Diamond Bulldogs will host No. 11 Auburn (20-5, 4-2) at Foley Field this weekend.
Georgia has already run through two ranked, SEC opponents. The Bulldogs took two of three from Kentucky on March 14-16. A road trip saw Georgia sweep Florida last weekend.
The Bulldogs have a new set of challenges this weekend in a hot Auburn team. Georgia head coach Wes Johnson feels there are a lot of similarities between Auburn’s line up and Georgia’s lineup.
The Bulldogs are 18th in the nation in team batting average (.320). Auburn is 28th (.317). The Tigers have power up and down their lineup. There are five hitters with at least three home runs in Auburn’s regular lineup. That power is what makes this weekend a little different than Georgia’s previous two SEC match ups.
“Their power (makes them different), not that the others aren’t, but I mean, one through nine can leave the yard at any time,” Johnson said.
Georgia features the top home run hitters in college baseball in Ryland Zaborowski (14 home runs) and Robbie Burnett (13 home runs).
“I really like their offense and I think their offense is really, really good,” Johnson told reporters on Thursday. “They’re similar to us, I think we’re very similar in general. I think the strength of their pitching staff is their depth. They’ll throw a lot of guys similar to us. I’m really excited, about another great opportunity.”

Finley will have the luxury of watching Goldstein and Curley work against Auburn’s offense this weekend but he feels confidence and attacking will be a big piece of Georgia’s success.
“I have a few ideas, but any SEC team is going to be really good, especially in a big weekend, so anybody can do anything,” Finley said. “It’s not the best team wins, it’s the whatever team plays the best. We’re going to go out there and attack and be confident in what we do.”

This feels like a slugfest waiting to happen. I like Georgia to take two out of the three. Goldstein, Curley and Finley hold this series in their hands.
If they hold down Auburn’s offense early in these games, Georgia will have the ability to get a lead and add on rather than pressing and trying to come from behind. No lead is safe with this Georgia line upbut having to do it regularly will be an exhausting experience.
Expect a lot of home runs and scoring but also some good at-bats due to the high-level pitching on both sides. This is a big boy series as the calendar begins to turn to April.
