ATHENS, Ga. — Redshirt freshman defensive lineman Shone Washington is no longer with the Georgia football team, trusted sources tell DawgsHQ. He is not listed on the team’s 2023 Roster.

Persons with knowledge tell us that Washington has not yet submitted paperwork to enter the transfer portal but he is likely to do so in the future. The New Orleans native appeared in just one game for Georgia a season ago. He had one solo tackle against Samford in week two.

Washington signed with Georgia in the 2022 class as a three-star prospect. He was the No. 614 overall prospect and No. 70 defensive lineman in America for that class. He was also the No. 29 player in Louisiana. Washington held 18 reported offers when he decided to commit to the Bulldogs a little over two weeks before the start of the Early Signing Period in 2021.

Florida got an official visit from the 6-foot-4 309-pound defender. He also took multiple unofficial visits to LSU during the recruiting process. Washington is one of four defensive linemen signed by Georgia in that 2022 class.

The Bulldogs had three defensive linemen taken in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Jalen Carter is likely to make that four defensive linemen in two years when the 2023 NFL Draft rolls around.

Where Georgia stands on the defensive line…

In addition to having one of the top defensive line coaches in the country in Tray Scott, Georgia is still pretty loaded at the position. The two previously-mentioned freshmen were highly-rated prospects — Jordan Hall and Jamaal Jarrett. Hall finished the 2023 cycle as a five-star prospect while Jarrett owned a four-star rating. Both were present for Thursday’s practice.

The Bulldogs also have rising sophomore Bear Alexander entering his first healthy spring with the team. He was with the team this time last year but didn’t participate in spring drills due to shoulder surgery.

Fellow 2022 signee Christen Miller, after taking a redshirt last season, is also back. Georgia also brings back Jonathan Jefferson, Warren Brinson, Nazir Stackhouse, and Zion Logue on the interior of the defensive line. Each of those players have been with the program for at least three seasons.

Scott and company are also pretty set at the defensive end position where Tramel Walthour is back for his sixth season of college ball. Mykel Williams also returns after leading the team in sacks a year ago and Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins, one of the top signees from Georgia’s 2021 class, is also in the mix. He can play multiple positions up front.

Georgia held its second of 12 practices this spring on Thursday. It will sprinkle in three scrimmages as well to make it 15 total workouts. That number includes the G-Day Spring Scrimmage on April 15.
