Situational football, fine details the focus for Georgia offense during bye
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia Football is back in action this week taking on Florida, a matchup that traditionally comes after a bye for both teams. That was the case this year with the Bulldogs and Gators both having an off week to prepare for Saturday’s game in Jacksonville. However, that wasn’t the only focus for Kirby Smart and company. On Monday, Smart shared what the week looked like for his team, specifically on offense where improvements might be more necessary.
“Just situational football,” Smart said. “I mean, the things you work on the off-week are, No. 1, opponents. No. 2, a lot of work. Probably 90 percent of our work was good on good against each other; situational football, third down, two minute, red area, second and ten, third down, team run. I mean, there’s no area in three practices that we didn’t work on.”
The Bulldogs put up 49 and 48 points in their first two games of the season against Power Five opponents – Oregon and South Carolina, both of whom are ranked in the top 25 at this point in the year. Since then though, things haven’t looked quite as easy for Todd Monken’s group. They struggled at times against Kent State, Missouri and Auburn before picking up some momentum before the bye week versus Vanderbilt in a 55-0 rout. Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett was asked how he and the offense worked during the bye week on some small adjustments and finer points that can be the difference between clicking on all cylinders and not.

“Just practice, just getting after it, being critical of ourselves and listening to corrections,” Bennett said. “It’s always been said that a player-led team versus a coach-led team is better. I think that’s because you keep guys accountable. It’s easier to talk to them, it’s easier to get people to do things the right way. I think that’s what we’ve got. It’s not just the coaches telling us that we need to fix things. It’s us going in the film room after practice, before practice, looking up script, knowing what we have to do and then when we don’t do it, we go fix it. I think that’s a sign of maturity. I think we did a good job of it over the bye week.”
Georgia is 7-0 on the year with five games left to play in the regular season including rival Florida, a top-10 Tennessee team, road games at Mississippi State and Kentucky as well as a home contest against Georgia Tech to close things out. The stretch has been looked at for quite some time as the hardest that the Bulldogs will face all season being away from home three out of the next four weeks on top of playing some tough teams. The first of those games comes Saturday at TIAA Bank Stadium in Jacksonville versus Florida. Kickoff time is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
