Cole Speer didn’t hold back on his feelings after receiving his offer from Georgia.

“It was definitely a moment I will remember for the rest of my life,” the Calhoun-based wideout told DawgsHQ just over a week ago. “I’m just grateful for the opportunity.”

Now, he’s part of the Class of 2022, announcing his commitment to the Bulldogs via Twitter on Thursday afternoon.

That’s a far cry from where the relationship stood just a couple of months back.

“This is going to sound crazy, but back in June, Georgia had no idea who I was,” Speer said after receiving the offer. “A member of the staff got in touch with Coach [Todd] Monken and told him about me. Right after he watched my film, he wanted to get me there for a workout.”

All up from there for Speer

Getting on the Georgia radar was no problem after an impressive showing, however.

“My speed and acceleration are what I think stood out to them most, along with my athletic ability,” Speer said. “I ran a 4.39 40-yard dash, posted a 38-inch vertical, and hit a top speed of 22 miles per hour.”

Tacking on a junior campaign of 1151 receiving yards on 59 receptions to go along with 11 touchdowns certainly didn’t hurt either.

While opportunities from East Carolina and Memphis were on the table, the possibilities at Georgia were too much to pass up.

That’s especially true for a young man who came up watching the Dawgs.

“If I had a dream school, I would say it is Georgia. I grew up watching them on TV with my family and friends every Saturday. Georgia has always been one of my favorite schools and football teams.”

Finding the fit

For Speer, the Bulldogs clearly met his hopes, as well.

“Finding the best fit possible and where I feel most comfortable is where I will end up. I want coaches that will push me and make me grow as a player and a person. I am someone who goes by their gut feeling and their heart and doesn’t like for people to try and push me to make a decision,” he said. “When I feel it’s the right time, that is when I’ll make my decision.”

He becomes Georgia’s third wide receiver commitment of the Class of 2022, joining De’Nylon Morrissette and Dillon Bell.
