For the second week in a row, a Georgia player is taking home SEC Player of the Week honors. Christopher Smith won Defensive Player of the Week following the Clemson win. Now, Stetson Bennett was named Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against UAB.

Bennett completed 10-of-12 passes for 288 yards and five touchdowns, tying the school record for most touchdown passes in a game. All five touchdowns came in the first half. Furthermore, at one point, the Blackshear, Ga. native was 5-for-5 for 245 yards and four touchdowns.

Bennett started in place of the injured JT Daniels, adding another chapter to his personal story. A former walk-on, Bennett left the program for junior college after the 2017 season, returned on scholarship in 2019 and started five games for the Bulldogs in 2020. He got hurt against Florida, and the next week, Daniels took over as the starter.

“I’m not going to lie, I was pretty nervous,” Bennett said about his feelings going into the game. “I couldn’t eat pregame meal, because I say that I don’t care what other people think — and I don’t really — but I was nervous. I was like, ‘I need to play well today.’ I prepared like I had to. And then, it helps when you’ve got Jermaine Burton running down the field on the second play to get all the jitters out.”

“He’s a winner. He’s a Georgia Bulldog, and he’s meant a lot to this program,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart added after Saturday’s 56-7 victory over UAB. “He’s done a great job, and all he does is do his job each and every day. I’m proud of how hard he’s worked to get this opportunity.”
