Stetson Bennett shares amazing story from flight with the Blue Angels
Stetson Bennett went to the Danger Zone. The Mailman made some fast decisions as a Georgia quarterback last season, but none were as fast as when he flew with the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels back in April.
There are many perks to winning a National Championship for your home state of Georgia. And there are a few perks to knowing people in South Georgia, too.
Stetson Bennett’s former roommate and former Georgia football player Nate McBride helped the Mailman hit the skies in Vidalia, Ga.’s Vidalia Onion Festival.
Bennett shared the details of his ride at SEC Media Days this week.
“That was the coolest thing I’ve ever done, and probably ever will do. If you get a chance, do it,” Bennett said.
I don’t know if I’ll ever have the chance, Stet the Jet. But if you or anyone in Vidalia want to arrange it next April, I’m there.
“(The pilots) start off slow. They don’t know (how passengers will handle the plane), they don’t want to make you pass out. I was nervous about passing out, throwing up. I didn’t want to embarrass myself.”
Stetson Bennett held his lunch down, and then the real fun began
After getting the warm-up out of the way, Bennett’s pilot took the off the training wheels.
“We flew for 45 minutes. Towards the end, (the pilot) looked in the back, came on the intercom, ‘Alright, we’re going to hit as many G’s as this plane can pull and get as close to the speed of sound as we can,” Bennett recalled.
“We hit 7.4 G’s. He looks in the back and says, ‘What do you think that was?’ And I was like, ‘7.4 ,that’s what you told me.’ He gave out a ‘whoop,’ he was excited.”

Bennett got such a thrill from the flight, he had to continue the adrenaline with some 80’s nostalgia, Maverick, Goose and the Ice Man.
“I was fired up, I never felt anything like it,” Bennett said.
“I went home and watched Top Gun immediately.”
With ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ owning the box office this summer and mustaches making a comeback thanks to Miles Teller’s character, ‘Rooster,’ I could see Georgia tapping into the Top Gun zeitgeist this season.
Maybe the Redcoat Band will learn the Top Gun Anthem. Maybe the Mailman tries to grow a ‘stache of his own.
Georgia starts with a ‘G’ and fighter jets pull ‘G’s. Bennett and Todd Monken’s offense might pull some serious ‘G’s this fall. It really isn’t too much of a stretch.
Let it marinate, Georgia marketing department. All I ask for is credit if you run with this million-dollar idea.
We’ll check back later this fall to see how Stet the Jet and his own squadron are doing.
