Syracuse officially announces hiring of Fran Brown as head coach
Georgia defensive backs coach Fran Brown is officially the next head coach at Syracuse. The university made the announcement Tuesday evening with statements from Brown, Director of Athletics John Wildhack, Chanceller Kent Syverud, and Bulldogs’ head coach Kirby Smart
“I am incredibly proud to be leading Syracuse Football at a university with a rich and storied tradition of academic and athletic excellence,” Brown said in the official announcement. “Syracuse Football has outstanding talent, great facilities and passionate alumni. The success of the players is my No. 1 priority—on and off the field. I want my guys to succeed in life, because they played football at Syracuse. My immediate area of focus is building relationships with my current players and putting together an elite staff, while also having fun on the recruiting trail. I’m ready to get to work and look forward to building something special for our fans.”
Brown is a New Jersey native and has proven to be a force on the recruiting trail in that region of the county. In the two seasons Brown has spent at UGA, the Bulldogs have gone 27-0 and they currently have the nation’s No. 5 pass defense, allowing just 5.6 yards per attempt. They finished No. 23 in that category a season ago.
In his first and only full recruiting cycle with the program, Brown has helped Georgia land a commitment from the nation’s No. 1 cornerback in Ellis Robinson, a five-star prospect. He also played a key role in UGA getting pledges from New Jersey standouts Nyier Daniels (offensive tackle) and Jordan Thomas (defensive tackle) as well as four-star defensive backs Demello Jones (Swainsboro; Swainsboro, Ga.) and Ondre Evans (Christ Presbyterian Academy; Nashville, Tenn.)

Brown helped a pair of Georgia defensive backs get drafted in 2023. Kelee Ringo went in the fourth round to the Philadelphia Eagles while Christopher Smith went to the Las Vegas Raiders in the fifth round.
“Fran is excellent,” Smart said. “No ego, he’s trustworthy, smart and he’s worked really hard during his two seasons here to earn an opportunity like this. He has built great relationships in our building, our players love him and we couldn’t be more excited for him, Teara and their family.”
