The Georgia Show: First spring scrimmage, Diamond Dawgs on fire

The Georgia Show was pushed to Monday night this week but moving the production didn’t change its contents. It was a loaded show with Rusty Mansell and I and we covered three major sports in the process.
It started with the Bullodgs’ first spring scrimmage, which was held on Saturday. DawgsHQ reported on the scrimmage, speaking with sources who told us that it was lopsided in favor of the defense. That caused quite a stir on The Dawg Walk fan forum.
Still, it’s fair to ask the question: Did you expect anything different? Georgia has a lot of new pieces on that side of the ball, including a quarterback who has played six quarters of meaningful football in his career. A lot of times defense is ahead of offense at this point in the year — even when a team is returning its starting quarterback.
So is it time to panic? Not hardly. If 2024 showed us anything, it’s that what happens in the spring isn’t necessarily what you can depend on come fall. Last year’s offense had its way with the defense for the vast majority of spring. It just didn’t improve from that point on and it didn’t deal well with the challenges it faced throughout one of the toughest Georgia schedules we’ve seen. That’s not something we normally see from a Kirby Smart team, no matter who is calling the plays.

Next we take a long look at Georgia baseball. The Bulldogs have played 30 games this year and they’ve won 28 of them. That’s good for No. 3 in the nation per D1 Baseball. Some who vote in the coaches poll have Bulldogs ranked as low as No. 9. UGA has a chance to silence more doubters this weekend with a three-game set at Texas. It will then return home the following weekend to take on No. 2 Arkansas.
Lastly, we talk Georgia basketball and the transfer portal. Losing Silas Demary stings but he’s certainly cashing in on his hot finish for the 2024-2025 season. The Bulldogs have lost three players to the portal and they’re working hard to hold on to the remaining returnees, ones who can help maintain continuity. Georgia is also looking hard at a couple of guards in the portal, a position of major need.
DawgsHQ also makes a couple of special announcements. You can come hang out with us on G-Day weekend as we will be at The Georgia Rodeo, headlined by The Red Clay Strays and Zach Top, on Friday, April 11. The next morning we will be at Redstone Market and Butcher broadcasting live for a G-Day Pregame show. Come meet the staff and maybe get a little DawgsHQ merchandise, too.
