Todd Monken named Georgia nominee for Broyles Award
Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken is up for the 2022 Broyles Award, which goes to the nation’s top assistant coach. A list of nominees was published on Tuesday by the Broyles Award with 51 coaches, no more than one from a school, being included. Monken was previously nominated during his time as the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State.
Monken’s Georgia offense ranks tied for sixth in the country and tied for second in the SEC for scoring, averaging 40.6 points per game. Thats an uptick from last year’s 38.6 points per game and puts the Bulldogs on pace to average more than 40.0 points per game for the first time since 2014, the school’s highest-ever scoring offense averaging 41.3 points per game.
Georgia is also near the top of the country for total offense coming in at No. 3 overall and No. 2 in the SEC with 509.6 yards per game. Georgia has never finished with an offense that averaged more than 500.0 yards per game.
Individually, quarterback Stetson Bennett is likely to become Georgia’s first 3,000-yard passer since Aaron Murray in 2013. Through 10 games, Bennett has 2,895 yards and 21 total touchdowns (14 passing and 7 rushing).

“Great. I mean, he was aggressive. He did a good job calling it. He puts together a good plan,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said after a game earlier this season when asked about Monken and his game plan. “He’ll tell you himself: he’s got a great offensive staff. I mean, he’s got guys that are in the room that have coached in the SEC, that understand the SEC. You know, the addition of (Stacy) Searels, B-Mac (Bryan McClendon), (Mike) Bobo, I mean, those guys come up with game plan things. They know these teams. They know the personnel of these teams. So, it really helps when you have a good game plan and you actually have people that can execute it because they have experience. It’s hard to defend a quarterback that can check things, make throws, has weapons and then can run on top of it. So, we’ve got to keep getting better and we’ve got to execute at a high level, but the biggest thing for them and for our offense is about getting points.”
Last year former Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning was a finalist for the award. Lanning become the head coach at Oregon after the season was over. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart won the Broyles Award during his time as an assistant at Alabama. Of the 26 winners, 21 have gone on to become a head coach in College Football. Georgia has only had one assistant win the award coming back in 2003 when defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Brian VanGroder was named the winner.
Semifinalists for the award will be announced next Tuesday (November 22nd) with finalists being named on the Tuesday after that November 29th. The winner will be announced one more Tuesday later on December 6th at a ceremony featuring the finalists.
