Todd Monken out, Mike Bobo in: watch our INSTANT REACTIONS
We found out about Todd Monken and Mike Bobo and reacted to it at the same time you did. Here are our instant thoughts.
First of all, let’s give Todd Monken all of the recognition he deserves.
Two National Championships. High-flying, explosive offenses. He re-tooled the Bulldogs’ entire offensive identity, and it worked.
We had a few Baltimore Ravens fans watching in our live stream, and they wanted to know what they can expect from the Todd Monken offensive coordinator hire.
I think it’s pretty clear that Monken knows how to dial up explosive plays in an era when that is the floor of expectations (unless you’re Iowa).
And he did it with an uncertain quarterback situation.
Go back to the 2020 season with all of its murkiness (in general, not just at Georgia’s quarterback position) and think about what Monken navigated.
No matter who played quarterback, the offense improved year over year. Yes – it was mostly Stetson Bennett.
But Monken made the most with the tools that he had at all times.
Here’s what we thought about the moves:
Now, for the Mike Bobo portion of our act
Look, I know the Mike Bobo news hits some of y’all like a toothbrush after orange juice.
You don’t like it. It isn’t the replacement you wanted.
Maybe you wanted Buster Faulkner.
Maybe you didn’t even know who you wanted Todd Monken’s replacement to be. You just knew you didn’t want it to be Mike Bobo.
I probably won’t change your mind on that, if that’s what you think and if that’s how you feel.
But here’s my ultimate assessment on this:
Has Kirby Smart not done enough to prove to you that he can navigate mistakes and cut bait when it’s needed?

He owned up to not starting Stetson Bennett sooner.
He fired James Coley before he went out and hired Todd Monken.
I won’t debate that it looks like a ‘buddy hire’ for Smart to hire his friend, Mike Bobo
But that isn’t because I agree. It’s because it isn’t worth debating. If you listened to Kirby Smart for any period of time over the past several seasons, then you know there is nothing ‘lazy’ about what this man does.
He cares about his family and he cares about winning National Championships at the University of Georgia.
And with Bobo’s work as an offensive analyst during this most recent football season, he seems to believe Bobo can not only keep this offensive machine rolling.
Smart believes he can improve upon it.
Maybe you don’t believe that. Maybe you’re right.
Losing Monken definitely hurts. I won’t say that hiring Bobo definitely hurts until he proves that to be the case.
These are the good ol’ days of Georgia football. Just my opinion, but I believe everyone should wait and see what happens in this era before condemning Bobo for what happened in the last one.
You know, when he had the best Georgia offense ever despite not having anywhere near as much talent to work with as he does now.
