Former Georgia target, elite two-way player Travis Hunter enters transfer portal
The nation’s No. 2 prospect from the 2022 class is in the transfer portal. Two-way player Travis Hunter, who spent the past season at Jackson State, is looking for his next stop after putting his name in on Sunday.
At 6-foot-1 170 pounds, Hunter was the nation’s No. 2 overall prospect and No. 1 athlete of the 2022 cycle per the On3 Consensus. The Collins Hill High School product was also the top player in the Peach State.
Hunter saw action at cornerback and receiver for JSU in 2022. He racked up 19 total tackles and two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. He also reeled in 18 passes for 190 yards and two scores.
The timing of Hunter’s move indicates that he wants some time to think about the process. His name went into the portal just before the start of the NCAA-mandated dead period where there can be no face-to-face contact with players and college staffers. Coaches can’t visit players and players can’t make their way to campuses.
The NCAA’s Early Signing Period begins on Wednesday, December 21. The dead period will last until Wednesday, January 12. That’s when the dead period will be lifted for all prospects but there is an NCAA provision that allows the school to host prospective student-athletes who plan to enroll mid-year.
A student-athlete who plans to enroll in January can visit a school as long as it’s within a seven day window before classes begin at that institution. Georgia’s spring semester begins on January 9, meaning it can start hosting prospective mid-year enrollees starting on January 2.

Georgia after Hunter, others in transfer portal…
The Bulldogs are quite active in the transfer market this offseason. They have already hosted a pair of highly-coveted wideouts who are exiting SEC programs. The Bulldogs had Mississippi State wideout Rara Thomas on campus last weekend. They hosted Missouri wideout Dominic Lovett on Thursday and Friday of this past week.
Texas A&M defensive back Smoke Bouie was on UGA’s campus this weekend for a visit. The Bulldogs are the favorite in that recruitment as of now but none of the players who have visited have put a timeline on a decision
Georgia has also expressed interest in other prospects. Kent State wideout Dante Sephas has reported a UGA offer. In additon, the Bulldogs have kicked the tires on South Carolina running back Marshawn Lloyd.
The Bulldogs currently have the nation’s No. 2 recruiting class for the 2023 cycle. They’re also getting ready to take on No. 4 Ohio State in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl in a College Football Playoff semifinal matchup. Kickoff is set for December 31 at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.
