Could Travon Walker really become a number-one overall NFL Draft pick?

The buzz grew louder for that possibility this week.

Let’s take a look at the factors moving Walker closer and closer to heights no one predicted originally.

Mel Kiper talks up Travon Walker on call with reporters

ESPN NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper dropped a hint this week that Travon Walker might climb.

Kiper pointed out how Walker passed NFL scouts’ tests with flying colors at the NFL Combine.

Even though Travon Walker didn’t put up massive numbers at Georgia last season, Kiper likes what he brings to the table.

“Walker just keeps rising in the pre-draft process as he starred at the Senior Bowl and tested extremely well at the combine,” Kiper said.

“He didn’t put up ‘wow’ numbers in college — he had six sacks for the national champs last season — but that’s because of how dominant the entire Georgia defense was around him. He could put up better numbers in the NFL, and he’s stout against the run too.”

Pro Football Network reported that the Jaguars will consider Walker at #1

Check out what Tony Pauline reported at Pro Football Network:

Sources have confirmed that the Jaguars have targeted Walker as a player they could take with the first pick. Sources have also confirmed that Walker will be sitting down with the front office and top brass of the organization in the coming weeks. The team will do its due diligence on Georgia’s defensive lineman.

Whoa.

Most mock drafts have Michigan EDGE rusher Aidan Hutchinson going number one overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

But that report from Pauline, if true, would obviously shake all of that up.

One more thing to consider on Travon Walker before the NFL Draft

If all of this seems far-fetched to you, I get it.

It could definitely be a smoke screen to muddy the NFL Draft waters. Maybe we end up seeing Walker go in the top five or top ten once it’s all said and done.

But check out the nerdy numbers on Travon Walker’s analysis from NFL Analytics number-cruncher Kent Lee Platte.

His metrics put Walker in legendary territory.

The NFL Draft obviously comes down to way more than numbers on a screen.

Walker’s detractors single out his lack of a pass rush presence, and they aren’t misguided. Hutchinson is more pure in that regard.

But Walker is special, too. And he’d feel right at home in Jacksonville if it shakes out that way.
