UGA football players from up North miss 'pizza', 'lobster' in Athens
UGA football players Xavier Truss and Devin Willock adjust to a lot of challenges in Athens.
But none of those challenges feel as difficult as learning a new gastronomy in the South.
No, gastronomy doesn’t have anything to do with stars. It isn’t a study of rising gas prices (we are all experts in that, now).
Gastronomy is about finding the food ya like. And for Truss and Willock – two Dawgs from up north – it’s a little different down here.
Xavier Truss comes to UGA football from Rhode Island
“When I got down here… some people don’t even know where Rhode Island’s at,” Truss said.
“Coming where I’m from, it’s important to show that we can ball, too, in the North. In the South, it’s a completely different game. I’m just glad that I can be an example for other kids that are trying to get out there from the North, or New England, or anywhere that’s not the South.”
So, yes. Xavier Truss wants to inspire people from up North.
But he also wants to eat.
He’s a big dude. 6’7″ 330 pounds of Georgia football offensive lineman big.
When asked what he misses about Rhode Island, Truss went with the three ‘F’s.
“I’d say friends, family and food,” Truss said with a gleam northward in his eye.
“Food-wise, I’d say the lobster. I miss my lobster, my clam cakes. It’s the seafood, I think. I’m half-Italian, so I miss my Italian food, too.”
Truss isn’t alone in his foreign Athens, Georgia foodscape
His fellow guard, Devin Willock, hails from New Jersey.
Obviously, he’s also a big dude.
Also 6’7″. 335 pounds.
“The biggest difference for me is probably the food. I’m a big guy. Love my Jersey food, love my bagels, my Italian pizza, all of that. That’s been hard to adjust to,” Willock said.
“Other than that, everything else has been great.”
With that much mass in a competitive Georgia football guard competition, something has to fuel these Northerners down South.

“Definitely got good barbecue, fried food,” Truss said. As a lineman, I’ve gotta watch my weight with that stuff.”
“Fully Loaded (pizza) is pretty good,” Willock said. “But nothing beats Jersey pizza. it can’t compare.”
Luckily for both of these giant UGA football players, Georgia has its own premium kitchen called Bones.
Maybe the cooking staff can adjust its menu to accommodate Fran Brown’s Northeastern recruiting pipeline.
Can’t imagine clam cakes will ever be on the menu, though.
