Georgia will travel to Austin for a showdown with No. 1 Texas next weekend and it will be as the nation’s No. 4 team according to the week eight US LBM/USA Today coaches poll. It’ll be the second time this season that the 5-1 Bulldogs have been involved in a top five matchup.

Oregon is up one spot to No. 2 after taking down Ohio State on Saturday. The loss moved the Buckeyes to No. 5. Penn State is up two spots to No. 3 after beating USC. Miami, Alabama, LSU, Clemson, and Tennessee round out the top 10, in that order.

The Bulldogs are coming off a 41-31 win over Mississippi State where, once again, they looked like Jekyll and Hyde. Georgia had a 34-10 lead after starting the fourth quarter with a three-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. When the defense took the field it had two chances to get off the field on third and long but each time it committed penalties that moved the chains.

Mississippi State used that drive to reach the end zone and then capitalized on a Georgia red-zone interception with an 80-yard touchdown drive to cut the lead to just 10 points at 34-24. UGA responded with a 16-play touchdown drive that took almost seven and a half minutes of game clock and made the score 41-24 on a one-yard touchdown run from Trevor Etienne. The Maroon Bulldogs bounced back and picked up a garbage-time touchdown with under two minutes left in the game.

It sets the stage for a showdown with the Longhorns, who have been College Football’s most consistent thus far in 2024. Georgia didn’t react well to the environment at Alabama earlier this season, falling into a 28-0 hole before roaring back to take the lead and eventually falling short. Smart and company will spend this week trying to come up with it’s best when it’s needed.

“Oh, yeah, absolutely,” Georgia quarterback Carson Beck said when asked if he is looking forward to the matchup with Texas. “I mean, I look forward to every single game, but obviously getting to play on the road in a big environment is always fun. I mean, that’s what you play in SEC for. That’s why you come to Georgia for, is playing big-time games. You know, we’ll watch the film from tonight, get better, work out the little things that maybe we went wrong, the things that we went right, and try to pursue forward and be ready for next week.”

Kickoff time to Georgia-Texas on Saturday is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
