Georgia baseball was without star sophomore outfielder Tre Phelps on Friday night against Auburn. There is some uncertainty on how long Phelps that could continue.

Phelps suffered a hamstring injury in Thursday’s practice. Georgia head coach Wes Johnson did confirm that Phelps will at least be out of Georgia’s lineup tomorrow.

“Tre will be out tomorrow, as far as that no news there,” Johnson told reporter after Friday’s game.

Johnson is hopeful that Phelps will be back on the field at some point soon but the Bulldogs won’t push Phelps back as Johnson is looking at the still long haul ahead.

“Hopefully we’ll have Tre back early next week,” Johnson said. “I mean, there’s obviously a quick turnaround tomorrow. We’re not going to push it this early in the season.”

Phelps has been a key to the Bulldogs’ early season 26-2 start as a valuable hitter in the middle of the line up as well as a reliable outfielder defensively.

In 27 games, Phelps has hit .305, hit five home runs, driven in 26 runs and scored 30 runs. Georgia head coach Johnson knows what Phelps means to his lineup but feels there are others who can step up until he is fully ready to rejoin the fray at some point. The Bulldogs have talked heavily about their depth in the lineup. They will continue to lean on that.

“It was tough hearing that, Tre and Ryan were out today,” Devin Obee said after Friday’s win. “But as I said, that’s just the depth of our lineup. It’s like when one guy goes down, we just get each other back. That’s just our mentality. It’s not that one guy has to do everything. It’s like you just pick each other up. Somebody’s got to step up. Tre is going to be back in there, and when he’s back in there, it’s going to be lights out.”

Ryan Black is ‘available’ for Georgia

Ryan Black was also not in the lineup on Friday. Black appears to be working toward a return to the field. According to Johnson, Black is available and could be on the field on Saturday.

“Yeah, Ryan’s available,” Johnson said.
