What Was Said: Carson Beck takes the podium as Georgia prepares for Vanderbilt
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia quarterback Carson Beck has been available for interviews after every game the Bulldogs have played this season. On Monday however, Beck made his 2023 season debut at the podium for reporters in Athens ahead of the Vanderbilt game.
DawgsHQ was on hand and shared with you everything Beck had to say.
Carson Beck on success against the blitz…
“First and foremost, the offensive line picking up the blitz helps me big time. Not only that, but then Sedrick and my study of film to see what defenses are going to try to do when they do blitz, making the right ID with mike points and changing protection, all that stuff. So having Sedrick there to help me with that, studying film and then obviously the execution of it to pick up the blitz, huge credit to our offensive line.”
Beck on how he watches film…
“I know the whole offensive line watches a lot of film together. Most of the time I’m watching film by myself, but there is a lot of communication back and forth between me and him. In practice, coach prepares us well with scout team looks.”
Beck on his accuracy…
“I think that’s just a chemistry thing. As we continue to play and I continue to understand certain guys and the way they run routes, I think that goes towards the whole accuracy thing.”
Carson Beck on his baseball background and handling pressure…
“For sure. I definitely can say that’s part of it. I’ve been through a lot of things in my life that helped me to the point where I can handle pressure, but definitely being a pitcher and playing baseball, you’re the only guy that’s doing anything when you’re up there pitching – baseball’s a little bit more boring of a sport – but you’re the guy. All the weight is on you to sit there and execute whether you’re throwing 80, 90, 100 pitches a game. I definitely can say that could be a credit to the way that I handle pressure.”
Beck on where he’s come the most since UT-Martin…
“Obviously the confidence standpoint, that’s the biggest thing. Continuing to move forward, I think I can improve in every area as far as accuracy goes, timing goes, little forward things. And obviously the knowledge of the game and the feel of the game, trying to learn how to play football again because it was a long time since I had played in a game. The game speed compared to practice, it’s so hard to replicate. Really the only way to replicate it is to play in the game.”
Beck on Rara Thomas…
“He’s definitely capable of making explosive plays. He helps our offense be explosive. I would say this: we have so many guys and so much depth at the wide receiver position where anybody that we put out there we fully expect to go out there and make plays. One thing he did really well in the game was make those contested catches in third down situations, obviously in the red zone, and man to man situations where its 1-on-1, him against the DB and there’s nothing else. I’m just going to give him a chance and let him go make a play.”
Carson Beck on Brock Bowers…
“He definitely attracts a lot of attention, at least I would assume. I’m not sitting in there with the opposing defensive coordinator and seeing what he is saying about our offense, but I would assume that a lot of defensive coordinators have game plans to try and contain him. But he’s Brock Bowers. He’s going to make plays, show up every single Saturday. Even just having him out there, the distraction that he makes for all the other guys to step up and make plays is a huge part I think.”
Beck on if he expected to play this well…
“I have standards and goals for myself, but as far as expectations, I just try to go out there and be myself every single game. I don’t expect to go throw for X amount of yards or X amount of completions. It’s never about the numbers. I said this on Saturday, but at the end of the day, it’s about winning. Especially at the quarterback position, that’s a huge thing you put on quarterbacks. How many wins do they have? How many losses do they have? At the end of the day, for our team I just think it matters that we get out with the win.”
Beck on preparing for potential weather in Nashville…
“There will probably be a little bit of a different preparation. We always do wet ball drills, dunk ’em in buckets and whatnot. In high school I think like seven of 11 games my senior year it was pouring rain. That’s Florida. I’ve definitely played in enough games where it’s pouring rain, so I try not to let the weather affect us.”
Carson Beck on how Bowers still gets so open…
“First and foremost, it’s a credit to his talent and skillset. Secondly, the way Coach Bobo is able to scheme him open on certain plays whether it’s with motion or a pulling guard, sprinting out and play action, there’s so many different ways and areas that we use to try and get him open.”

Beck on confidence boost from throwing to George Pickens at 2022 UGA Pro Day…
“Maybe. I don’t know. That was definitely fun, but so long ago. I think that was my sophomore year. That was definitely a cool experience to get to throw for him, especially with so many NFL scouts there.”
Beck on the standard for the Georgia offense…
“First and foremost, execution. Our goal every single time we step on the field, every single drive is to score a touchdown. Is that going to happen? Probably not, but it is a goal. As far as execution goes, I think we did a really good job this Saturday, and moving forward we’ve got to try and be consistent in that.”
Carson Beck on the receiving options, if that puts less pressure on him…
“Oh yeah. Hundred percent. The whole entire offense that we have, our offensive line, tight ends, wide receivers, running backs, the defense that we have, how we’re able to execute on special teams. Football is a team game. It’s not about me. My success is hugely reliant on the players that I have around me, and they’ve been performing really well. That’s a credit to them.”
Beck on his relationship with Mike Bobo, progression of it – and whether he wants to keep it on an RPO…
“Our relationship is really good, and it’s progressed in terms of the trust we have in each other. He’s always been really good at talking to me and seeing what I want, but obviously there’s certain things where he’s like, ‘We’re going to do this and this,’ and I’m like ‘Okay.’ I’ve got trust in him.
As far as RPOs and running the ball and whatever, obviously that’s not really who I am. I can do that every now and then, but it’s really about what the defense gives us. Most of the time, they’re not making me pull it on the read.”
Beck on his sliding from baseball, Brock Vandagriff’s decision to not slide…
“Obviously I learned how to slide playing baseball, so I do know how to do that. I try to, I try not to get hit as much as possible and preserve the body. I was making fun of Brock after that play when he came to the sidelines. He kind of got whacked, did a little flip, and I was like, ‘You need to make a decision. Either slide or go out of bounds or lower your shoulder. If you’re going to get hit, lower your shoulder and run him over.’ That was definitely funny to see.”
Carson Beck on lessons he learned from all the QBs…
“I think the position of quarterback is so unique because no two quarterbacks are the same. Being around so many different quarterbacks in my time here, and not only that but as far as training goes and guys I’ve trained with back in Jacksonville with my quarterback coach, being able to see the different guys process things and how they throw, different mechanics, you can take different bits and pieces from each guy because everyone is so different and unique and try to add it to your game so I can continuously improve.”
