Former Indiana Miss Basketball and Alabama transfer Chloe Spreen has committed to the Indiana women’s basketball team. The 2024 IndyStar Miss Basketball and Bedford North Lawrence graduate announced Wednesday afternoon on social media that she has committed to Teri Moren and the Hoosiers.

Spreen, a 5-foot-10 guard, transfers to Indiana after playing her freshman season at Alabama, where she appeared in 20 games, averaging 6.7 minutes per contest. She totaled 23 points, nine rebounds, 10 assists and three steals during the season.

Spreen has three years of eligibility remaining and will join an Indiana program undergoing a major roster rebuild.

Rated a four-star prospect by ESPN, Spreen first gained high-major Division I interest in middle school. Indiana originally offered her a scholarship before her freshman year of high school, but she ultimately committed to Alabama in April 2023, choosing the Crimson Tide over Ohio State and Kentucky.

As a high school standout at Bedford North Lawrence, Spreen led the Stars to the 2023 Class 4A state championship as a junior, averaging 19 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.7 steals while shooting a career-best 38% from 3-point range.

She followed that with an even stronger senior season, posting career highs of 20.4 points and 6.9 rebounds per game while leading a younger squad back to regionals. By the end of her high school career, Spreen had amassed 1,869 points, 633 rebounds, 259 assists, 200 steals and 62 blocks.

Her return to Indiana comes at a pivotal time for the Hoosiers. IU is replacing four starters, including 2020 Indiana Miss Basketball Sydney Parrish, Chloe Moore-McNeil and Karoline Striplin, who have exhausted their eligibility. Additionally, Yarden Garzon has entered the transfer portal. Shay Ciezki is the lone returning starter from last season.

Spreen will be one of at least three Indiana natives on next year’s team, joining current freshman Faith Wiseman, a 6-foot-4 forward from Indian Creek, and 2025 IndyStar Miss Basketball Maya Makalusky, a four-star wing from Hamilton Southeastern.

At Alabama, Spreen played a limited role but showed flashes of her scoring ability, including a season-high five points in a 98-49 win over Georgia State on Dec. 2. She shot 26.9% from the field in her freshman season, but her high school pedigree suggests she has much more to offer as she returns to her home state.

Spreen’s addition provides Indiana with a proven scorer who understands the high expectations of Indiana basketball. As the Hoosiers continue to reshape their roster, the return of the former Indiana Miss Basketball signals a significant step forward in their offseason efforts to retool for the upcoming season.
