Davis Kern is one of the top prospects in the state of Iowa in the Class of 2025. The 6-foot-8 and 220 pound forward from Linn Mar High School also has a long history with the McCaffery family, having played AAU basketball with their youngest son, Jack, when the two were in younger.

With all that in mind, it’s natural that the Hawkeyes would begin to ramp up their recruiting efforts with the talented forward. Kern made an unofficial visit to Iowa this fall for a football game and he has been to a couple of basketball games this season, including Saturday when Iowa defeated Illinois.

“It was really loud and a cool game to be at. I have been to some games this year, but yesterday was the loudest I have ever been to at Carver,” he said.

Kern said that Iowa assistant Matt Gatens has been his lead recruiter and that he really enjoys talking to him and that he learns a lot from their conversations.

While he was born in Minnesota, Kern has spent most of his life in Iowa and calls himself a Hawkeye fan. But, he will have plenty of options as his recruitment continues to grow.

“I currently have offers from UNI and South Dakota State,” he said. “I have been hearing from Iowa State, Creighton, and Wisconsin.”

While he doesn’t have any other college visits set up at this time, he said he would like to see some of those schools in the future.

This season at the high school level, Kern is averaging 19.2 points and 7.3 rebounds for Linn Mar. He has made some adjustments to his game after hearing a suggestion from Fran McCaffery this fall.

“He (McCaffery) told me to be more aggressive with the ball. I have been working on attacking the basket more off the dribble. Last year I was more catch and shoot and posting up. Now I have added attacking and driving to my game.”

Once the high school season is over, Kern will turn his attention to AAU basketball. He will be playing with the Martin Brothers program and he is looking forward to playing with his teammates in their program.

Love playing with my team and I am excited because we are going to have a really good year.
