Assessing the Iowa Women's Basketball resume after non-conference play
Selection Sunday is still 83 days away, but it’s never too early to start evaluating how your resume is shaping up. The Iowa Women’s Basketball team heads into the Christmas break with a 10-2 overall record, while they are 0-1 in Big Ten play. While there’s still a ton of basketball to play, with a week and a half off, this is a good time to take a brief look at how things are coming together thus far.
A look at the Hawkeyes resume through 12 games…
Breaking down the Hawkeyes resume
Before we get into the actual resume, it’s important to note that the quadrant-based system is different for women’s basketball than on the men’s side. Starting this season, an update was made to the Quad classifications. Based on historical women’s basketball data, the selection committee has made the quad ranges smaller than on the men’s side, making it harder to earn Q1/Q2 wins. Here is what those quadrant ranges look like…
Home: Q1: 1-25 Q2: 26-55 Q3: 56-91 Q4: 91-362
Away: Q1: 1-40 Q2: 41-80 Q3: 81-130 Q4: 131-362
Neutral: Q1 1-35 Q2: 36-65 Q3: 66-105 Q4: 106-362
Through the non-conference portion of the schedule, the Hawkeyes have compiled several respectable wins, but have not yet registered a Quad 1 win. They are 2-0 in Q2 games, 4-0 in Q3 games and 4-0 against Q4 opponents. It is important to note that both Michigan State and Tennessee, despite being losses, are firmly in the Q1 category, which is good news. Iowa State, to this point, has fallen well short of expectations and that win over the Cyclones at home is very nearly of the Q3 variety. Other wins over Northern Iowa, Kansas and Drake are within range to jump up to the Q2 level if they live up to the preseason expectations in their respective conferences. Iowa currently sits at #30 in the NET rankings, which is sort of in no man’s land. It’s well within at-large range, but they would need to get into the top 20 to have any hope at hosting for the fourth consecutive season.
The remaining schedule for the Hawkeyes
Opportunities will be plentiful in Big Ten play. As it currently stands, 13 of the Hawkeyes remaining 17 games would come against Q1/Q2 opponents. The Hawkeyes will get the opportunity to host three of the four Big Ten teams that are ranked the AP Top 10. What you will notice is that there are four away games against teams in the 33-38 range of the NET rankings and with the cutoff line for away Q1 being #40, all of those are very much at risk to fall to the Q2 level. That being said, by the time Selection Sunday rolls around, the Hawkeyes will have played enough Q1/Q2 games that a game here or there falling a level won’t be resume altering. It’s also worth noting that their three lowest ranked opponents remaining all come at Carver and really have no chance of getting off the Q4 line, while Wisconsin (83) is also at risk of falling below the threshold for a Q3 game (top 90).
