We continue our Iowa Baseball campus newcomers series with Southeastern CC utility transfer Caleb Wulf. A native of West Liberty, IA, Wulf spent two years with the Blackhawks program, combining for 186 hits over two seasons. As a true freshman in 2023, Caleb earned Second Team All-Region honors, batting .384, with a .458 on-base percentage, including 24 doubles, two home runs and 57 RBI’s. He broke the school record for hits in a season (101) and was fourth in the country for NJCAA II.

He followed up his freshman season by earning Western Conference All-Star honors playing for the Burlington Bees in the Prospect Summer League. This past season as a sophomore, Wulf batted .353, with a .416 on-base percentage, including 13 doubles, two home runs and 73 RBI’s. He earned Second Team All-Region honors for the second straight season.

We caught up with the 5-foot-9, 195 pound utility player to discuss his transfer to Iowa and much more.

Q: When do you move to Iowa City and what is your excitement level like for that move in day?

WULF: I move into my apartment on August 1st and I am very excited for that day to come, but I will also be anxious to get the season rolling.

Q: What number do you plan on wearing and why?

WULF: I plan on wearing number 1 because it was my childhood number and Iowa was my dream school. It’s always been my goal to wear #1 for the Hawkeyes.

Q: What have you been doing this summer to prepare for when you join the team?

WULF: I’ve been working out at the University, lifting and hitting with some of the other transfers.

Q: You collected 186 career hits in two years at Southeastern, how would you evaluate the start of your college baseball career?

WULF: I couldn’t ask for a better start to my college career. I think I made the best choice possible in going to Southeastern and it was a great experience.

Q: What have you learned about yourself as a player over two years at SCC? How has SCC prepared you for the jump to DI baseball?

WULF: I think the biggest thing I learned about myself at Southeastern is that I have no set postition and that works out to my advantage. I played four different positions at Southeastern and enjoyed each opportunity. SCC is ran the proper way and I think Coach Schulte does a great job preparing everyone for the next level and life in general.

Q: Looking back at your recruitment out of the transfer portal, what stood out about the Iowa Baseball program that made them an easy choice over others?

WULF: Iowa was the best school that reached out to me. Being 30 minutes from home and growing up near the school really made the choice easy. Nobody recruited me as heavily as Iowa and it made things very easy.

Q: What is your relationship like with the coaching staff? Who do you talk with the most?

WULF: I really like the coaching staff and everything they bring to the table. I would probably say I talk with Coach Sutherland the most, although I try to stay in touch with all of the coaches on a consistent basis.

Q: Have you gotten a chance to talk with any of the current players on the team? What is your relationship like with them?

WULF: I have a relationship with a few of that players already. I grew up playing with more than a handful of them, so they reach out to me when they want to get some work in.

Q: If someone asked you, “what do you bring to the Iowa team?”, how would you describe your game?

WULF: I would say I bring some life and competitiveness to the team. I enjoy everything that happens around the field, but also will compete any chance I get.

Q: Where does the coaching staff see you fitting in on the team?

WULF: I don’t know exactly where the coaching staff sees me fitting in, but I hope to fit in wherever is needed and helps the team win day in and day out.
