Campus Newcomer: Wake Tech 3B transfer Andrew Holub
We continue the Iowa Baseball campus newcomer series, with Wake Tech 3B transfer Andrew Holub. A native of Bronxville, NY, Holub began his collegiate career with one semester at Tulane, but has spent the last two seasons with Wake Tech CC in Raleigh, NC.
As a freshman at Wake Tech, Holub batted .336, with a .446 on-base percentage, including ten doubles and 30 RBI’s. He followed it up with a big year as a sophomore this past season. Holub batted .433, with a .490 on-base percentage, including 21 doubles, ten home runs, 56 RBI’s and 27 stolen bases. He earned NJCAA Third Team All-American honors, marking the first time in six years that a Wake Tech player received that distinction.
Andrew spent a short time playing in the Cal Ripken Summer League with the Gaithersburg Giants, totaling ten hits, one home run and seven RBI’s over seven games. The Giants went 5-2 over his seven games played.
We caught up with the 6-foot-3, 215 pound third baseman to discuss his transfer to Iowa and much more.
Q: When do you move to Iowa City and what is your excitement level like for that move in day?
HOLUB: I’m moving in the second week of August, so I can be on campus a week or two before school starts and get familiar with everything. I’m just so psyched for the next chapter and getting to be a part of this team. I know move-in day will be exciting and I am just eager to get going with fall ball and to meet the guys.
Q: What number do you plan on wearing and why?
HOLUB: I hopefully will get to wear number 28 because that’s the number I wore at my previous school and I have grown to love it.
Q: What have you been doing this summer to prepare for when you join the team?
HOLUB: The first half of the summer I trained at Rockland Peak Performance (RPP) to work on my swing and do the weight training regiment to get into the best shape possible, and the second half I played for the Gaithersburg Giants in the Ripken League to play summer ball, so I could get ready to compete.
Q: How would you evaluate your season last year at Wake Tech?
HOLUB: I feel like I definitely made progress from the previous year, and was able to showcase my hard work I put in the previous summer, where I worked on the individual aspects of my game that I needed to improve.
Q: You were the first Wake Tech player in 6 years to earn NJCAA All-American honors. What did that honor mean to you?
HOLUB: It really meant a lot just being able to be recognized for the season I had. I was just really happy to be able to share this with my coaches at Wake Tech because without them I would not have been able to accomplish what I did.

Q: Looking back at your recruitment out of the transfer portal, what stood out about the Iowa Baseball program that made them an easy choice over other schools?
HOLUB: I felt that I had an immediate connection with the coaching staff and saw them as coaches who really want the team to be a family. Once I visited Iowa, I was floored by the facilities and how welcoming everybody was.
Q: Were there any other teams that you heavily considered during your recruitment?
HOLUB: I was fortunate enough to have a lot of options, but immediately knew that Iowa was the best fit for me.
Q: What is your relationship like with the coaching staff? Who do you talk with the most?
HOLUB: I’ve been able to talk well with all of the coaches and had a great time talking with Coach Heller when I visited, but I talk primarily with Coach Sutherland who I’ve developed a great rapport with.
Q: Have you gotten a chance to talk with any of the current players on team? What is your relationship like with them?
HOLUB: I’m really excited to meet the team, but so far, I was taken around campus by Jack Young. The rest of the team was gone for summer break.
Q: If someone asked you “what do you bring to the Iowa team?” How would you describe your game?
HOLUB: I feel like I can benefit the team offensively and I am also a player who will always work hard, always want to learn and continue to make adjustments.
Q: Where does the coaching staff see you fitting in with the team?
HOLUB: I was recruited as a third baseman, but I am happy to play wherever the coaches want me to play.
