Cole Marsh makes college decision
Cole Marsh has made his college decision. The versatile 6-foot-6, 215-pound multisport star from Waverly-Shell Rock is going to be a Hawkeye after accepting a preferred walk-on opportunity from the Iowa football staff this week.
Marsh, who plays quarterback in high school, earned scholarship offers from Northern Iowa, Sioux Falls, Northern State, Upper Iowa, and Grand View during the recruiting process, but the chance to play at Iowa was too good to pass up.
“I have been a Hawkeye fan my whole life,” Marsh told HawkeyeReport.com. “I chose a preferred walk-on opportunity to Iowa over scholarship offers to other schools because this opportunity is once in a lifetime, and I can’t pass up on it.”
“The coaching staff at Iowa is amazing and has been great to me throughout the recruiting process,” continued Marsh. “The energy inside of Kinnick Stadium is unmatched. I love Iowa City – it’s such a great town and it’s not too far from home.”
“I just feel like this is the best place for me to develop, not only as a player but as a person and a student in the classroom,” Marsh said. “I plan to do something in business and Iowa has an amazing business program.”

As a junior, Marsh directed the offense for Waverly-Shell Rock as they went 10-1 and made it to the state quarterfinals in Class 4A. He finished the season with 954 yards passing, 26 yards rushing, and 13 touchdowns on the year. Also a standout basketball player, Marsh averaged 14.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game this past winter as Waverly-Shell Rock was the state runner-up in Class 3A.
At Iowa’s camp in June, Marsh lined up at tight end for the first time in his life and quickly made an impression with his size, athleticism, and physicality, which eventually led to the preferred walk-on opportunity from the Hawkeyes.
“I came to camp as a tight end having never played tight end before, but I competed and tried to do everything to the best of my ability,” said Marsh. “A couple weeks after camp, I got a call telling me I had a preferred walk-on opportunity from Iowa.”
“I will be coming in as a tight end, but that could change when I get there,” Marsh said. “The opportunity to be part of a program like Iowa doesn’t come around often and I’m very excited about it.”
