As early as it is in the season, the Hawkeyes really needed to avoid adding another loss to the ledger on Saturday evening. Securing a win over the preseason ASUN favorite, Stetson, would not only restore some confidence for the ballclub but also to give them an early resume boost. The Iowa pitching staff wasn’t perfect, but they managed to prevent things from unraveling. Meanwhile, the offense was consistently productive, leading the Hawkeyes to a 7-0 shutout win over the Hatters.

After several missed opportunities in scoring situations on Friday, the Iowa offense found their rhythm and capitalized on their chances against the Stetson pitching staff. Leading 1-0 in the fifth inning, the Hawkeyes loaded the bases with nobody out, and this time, they didn’t waste the opportunity. Miles Risley and Jackson Beaman each delivered RBI singles, extending the lead to 3-0.

The Hawkeyes broke the game open an inning later in the sixth. With runners on base once again, Gable Mitchell punched an RBI single past the diving shortstop Lorenzo Meola to make it 4-0. One batter later, Daniel Rogers stepped up with the bases loaded and drove a two-run single into left center field, putting Iowa in full control of the game.

On the mound, the Iowa pitching staff wasn’t quite as sharp as they would have hoped, giving up ten free bases, but they excelled at getting out of jams. Aaron Savary allowed just one hit over 5.1 innings and struck out six Stetson hitters, but he walked six batters and threw only 44 of his 84 pitches (52.4%) for strikes. Ganon Archer relieved Savary in the sixth inning after he walked a pair of hitters. Although Archer walked one himself, he managed to get Salvador Alvarez to pop out, ending the threat.

Later, in the eighth inning, the Hatters loaded the bases with one out, threatening to cut into the Hawkeyes’ 6-0 lead. Daniel Wright was able to get Foster Apple to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. For the game, Iowa pitchers retired 12 of the 13 hitters with runners on base.

Jackson Beaman added a 409-foot solo home run in the top of the ninth to give the Hawkeyes the 7-0, touchdown lead. Daniel Wright recorded the final five outs of the game to finish of Iowa’s shutout win over the Hatters.

Offensively, the Hawkeyes totaled ten hits, including seven hits with runners on base. Ben Wilmes, Miles Risley and Jackson Beaman each finished with two hits on the night, while seven different hitters recorded a hit.
