Latest on the status of Cooper DeJean
In a season filled with injuries primarily on the offensive side of the ball, the Iowa football team apparently took another hit on Wednesday during practice. This time it was on the defensive side of the ball with Cooper DeJean potentially sustaining an injury to his lower leg. The injury is believe to be significant and would sideline him for the final two regular season games and a potential Big Ten title game if Iowa were to beat either Illinois or Nebraska.
DeJean, who was a mid-season All American cornerback according to the Associated Press, The Athletic, and ESPN, and a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award, Lott IMPACT Trophy, and Nagurski Trophy, has had an outstanding junior year for the Hawkeyes.
He has 41 tackles this season, including a pair for loss. He has two interceptions this season and is credited for five passes broken up. Last season, DeJean intercepted five passes, returning three for touchdowns. He is also one of the top punt returners in the country. This year he is averaging 11.5 yards per return with one touchdown. He also had a potential game winning punt return touchdown called back after an officials review.
There was also a few snaps this season on the offensive side of the ball for DeJean. He ran the ball one time for eight yards against Northwestern at Wrigley Field.
