DJ Vonnahme makes college decision
DJ Vonnahme has made his college decision. The versatile 6-foot-4, 205-pound Carroll native announced today that he is headed to the University of Iowa after accepting a preferred walk-on opportunity with the Hawkeyes.
Vonnahme, who attends Kuemper Catholic High School, had scholarship offers from Colorado State, Northern Iowa, South Dakota, and South Dakota State, but the opportunity to play at Iowa was too good to pass up.
“I chose it over my scholarships because it has always been a dream of mine to play at Iowa,” Vonnahme told HawkeyeReport.com. “So to get that opportunity, it was a hard one to pass on.”
A high school quarterback, Vonnahme finished his junior season with 1,339 yards passing, 308 yards rushing, and 29 touchdowns for Kuemper Catholic, but it was at the tight end position that he impressed the Iowa coaches at their camp last month, which led to the preferred walk-on opportunity.

“They are called TE-U for a reason and to turn that down would be a big mistake, in my opinion,” said Vonnahme.
A multi-sport athlete, Vonnahme qualified for state track in the 100 and 200 meter dash this past spring in his first year of running high school track. He ended up finishing 8th in Class 2A in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.28 seconds. Also, this past winter, Vonnahme averaged 9.2 points and 6.9 rebounds for the Kuemper basketball team.
