Four numbers to know ahead of Iowa-Indiana WBB
The Iowa women’s basketball team (12-4, 2-3) returns to Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday to host the Indiana Hoosiers (11-4, 3-1). It will be the 80th all-time meeting between the two programs, with Iowa leading the series 56-23. It’s matchup that has become a bit of a rivalry as of late due to the success of both sides, but the Hawkeyes have held strong at home, winning the last three meetings in Iowa City. Head coach Teri Moren and her team enter the contest with an 11-4 overall record and a 3-1 mark in Big Ten play. The Hoosiers defeated Northwestern 68-64, in Evanston on Wednesday.
HawkeyeReport takes a look at some important numbers to know going into Sunday’s matchup between the Hawkeyes and Hoosiers.
18.7 – Yarden Garzon and Shay Ciezki made threes per 100 possessions
The Hoosiers are in the top half of the Big Ten when it comes to three-point shooting, averaging 7.3 triples per game at a 34.0% clip. Yarden Garzon and Shay Ciezki do the majority of the heavy lifting from behind the arc, averaging 18.7 made threes per 100 possessions they’re on the floor. They are the fourth-best three-point shooting duo in the Big Ten, totaling 60 made threes on 161 attempts (37.3%). Garzon has registered seven games with 3+ made threes, while Ciezki has four such games.
61.8% – Paint shooting percentage by Lilly Meister and Karoline Striplin
With the graduation of Mackenzie Holmes, Indiana has not had the same luxury of being able to run the offense through their star post player this season. That being said junior Lilly Meister and Tennessee transfer Karoline Striplin have been able to recreate Holmes in the aggregate, combining together to average 20.3 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. The post duo has done particularly well in the paint, converting 61.8% of their 173 shot attempts. That’s where Indiana is going to try to get them the bulk of their looks. When shooting outside the paint, they are a combined 14 of 43 (32.6%).

69.0 – Indiana possessions per game
The Hoosiers are one of the slower paced teams in the entire country, ranking 253rd in possessions per game (69.0). In the Big Ten, only Washington, Minnesota, and Wisconsin playing at slower tempo. Their tactic has worked well, as they have held opponents to less than 75 points in all 15 games, while UCLA (73) has been the only team to score more than 70 points against the Hoosiers in regulation. Limiting turnovers will be paramount in what is expected to be a lower-scoring game.
21.3% and 14.87 – Indiana forced turnover rate and turnovers forced per game
Although it didn’t necessarily yield great results in Champaign for the Hawkeyes, Sunday’s matchup against the Hoosiers will be another one against a team that struggles to force opponents into mistakes. Indiana’s 21.3% opponent turnover rate ranks 13th in the Big Ten and 265th in the country, while their 14.87 turnovers per game ranks 287th. In five games against teams ranked inside the top 75 in adjusted offensive efficiency, the Hoosiers have forced just 63 turnovers (12.6 per gm), with three of those five opponents turning it over 11 times or fewer. The Hawkeyes have turned it over 15+ times in seven of their last ten games.
