At South Dakota State, Hawthorne redshirted his first year on campus, but hit the ground running in his second year, earning FCS Freshman All-American honors after collecting 22 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks for the Jackrabbits. Playing 307 snaps in 2024, he had an overall grade of 83.0 from PFF, which was the top mark for interior defensive linemen on the team.
Overall, Hawthorne is the third addition for Iowa from the transfer portal this recruiting cycle, joining quarterback Hank Brown and defensive tackle Jonah Pace.
