Disappointing. That’s the word to describe the Hawkeyes trip to the Jax College Baseball Classic. They had a lead in the seventh inning of all three games, but the bullpen floundered in each. On Sunday, Wichita State put up a crooked number in three straight innings to pull out a 12-6 victory. Iowa is now 0-14 all-time against the Shockers.

The Hawkeyes got out to a hot start against Wichita State starter Daniel Zang. Andy Nelson delivered a two-run single, which was followed by an RBI single from Ben Wilmes to put Iowa up 3-0 in the second inning. Zang lasted for just five out, before the Shockers went to the bullpen. Caleb Anderson came on in early relief and Sam Petersen gave him a rude welcome with an RBI single of the first pitch he saw. Kyle Huckstorf added a sacrifice fly to drive in a run in the fifth inning and Iowa led 5-0.

On the mound, Cade Obermueller got his second start of the season. It wasn’t the cleanest, most efficient outing you’ll every see out of him, but it got the job done. Wichita State put two runners on base in four of his five innings of work, but got two strikeouts and two double plays to end all of the threats. Obermueller threw 55.3% of his 85 pitches for strikes and did what he had to do to give the Hawkeyes a chance.

Rick Heller went with Reece Beuter out of the bullpen in the sixth inning and that was where the game went by the wayside, again. A leadoff double from Derek Williams and a walk put two runners on base for WSU for the fifth time. This time, Obermueller wasn’t the pitching to get out of the jam. Josh Livingston delivered a three-run home run to cut into the Iowa lead. It was just the beginning of another late inning nightmare.

Jack Whitlock got Iowa out of the sixth inning, but let the lead fully slip away in the seventh. After a one out walk, Derek Williams doubled to left field, Ryan Callahan was thrown out at the plate, but umpires called Michael Seegers for obstruction, which allowed the run to count. Jaden Gustafson followed with an RBI single, while a walk in the ensuing at-bat knocked Whitlock from the game. Ben DeTaeye into the game trying to limit the damage, but Seth Stroh did the ultimate damage. He sent a three-run home run over the right field wall to give Wichita State the 8-5 lead.

The Hawkeyes got a run back in the bottom of the inning, with Gable Mitchell driving in Reese Moore with an RBI single. However, the Shockers delivered the knock out blow in the top of the eighth. Jordan Rogers provided the power with a three-run home run over the short wall in the right field corner to make it 12-6. The last six Iowa hitters that went to the plate were retired and that wrapped up an 0-3 weekend in Jacksonville
