In-state commits always enjoy opportunity to get back to Iowa City
Even if in-state commits Cam Buffington, Preston Ries, Derek Weisskopf, and Cody Fox have been to Iowa City a hundred times before, they always enjoy another opportunity to get back on campus. This weekend, the four future Hawkeyes were in town for a junior day at Iowa. It is something they have all been to before, but there is always something new to appreciate.
“I’ve been to a couple of these before so I’ve seen a lot, but every time I go I feel like I get more and more impressed with what goes on inside there,” said Buffington, a junior at Winfield-Mt. Union. “What stands out to me is the care they give their players from pretty much every aspect you can think of.”
Ries, a Monticello native, agreed that he always leaves Iowa City impressed. That goes from his very first visit as a high school freshman all the way to the latest as a junior this year.
“It all stands out since I’ve been going to Iowa City since my freshman year on game day visits and recruiting days, then being offered as a sophomore and committing,” Ries said. “It’s always good to get back down to Iowa City to meet with the coaches and talk to new people. They are truly the best.”
Committing so early also means the players have spent more time around the program than your average recruit, which is sure to help their transition to college in 2024. With Weisskopf, Buffington, and Ries all projected to play linebacker, they also get to go through that process together as well.

“What stood out to me today was the three of us linebackers were introduced more in-depth on how the Iowa defense is ran and what the linebackers are expected to do,” said Weisskopf, a junior at Williamsburg.
Ultimately, whether it is your first time on campus or visit No. 100, the chance to go through the recruiting process is a blessing for the group of 2024 commits.
“The whole experience of being there will never get old to me,” said Fox, a junior at East Buchanan. “The people make the place and there are some damn good people at Iowa.”
