Inside the rankings on Iowa's 2024 recruiting class

With a new On300 update this week, it is time to dive back inside the rankings on the Iowa Hawkeyes’ 2024 recruiting class to get a better idea of how things stack up individually and for the class as a whole.

In this article, we break down how each of Iowa’s commits rank up across the four major recruiting sites and how that determines their On3 Industry Ranking, the most advanced and complete measurement in the business.

Derek Weisskopf

A 6-foot-3, 205-pound prospect with impressive athleticism, Derek Weisskopf could play on either side of the ball at multiple positions, but right now projects at linebacker for the Hawkeyes. Weisskopf verbally committed on April 20, 2022, choosing Iowa over scholarship offers from Iowa State, Wisconsin, and Nebraska. As a junior, he finished the season with 60 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and six interceptions on defense and 37 catches for 628 yards and 12 touchdowns on offense for Williamsburg.

Weisskopf is a four-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 90.76 right now.

Cody Fox

Iowa’s very first commitment in the Class of 2024 came from in-state offensive lineman Cody Fox. A 6-foot-5, 270-pound mauler with an accomplished wrestling background, Fox is an absolutely devastating run blocker. He committed on June 19, 2021, shortly after receiving an offer from Iowa following his freshman year of high school at East Buchanan.

Fox is a four-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 89.76 right now.

Will Nolan

A 6-foot-6, 275-pound offensive tackle, Will Nolan earned a long list of scholarship offers once his impressive junior film started making the rounds. The Illinois native verbally committed to Iowa on May 8, 2023, choosing the Hawkeyes over offers from Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, Vanderbilt, Iowa State, Duke, Syracuse, Marshall, Miami-OH, Akron, Ball State, Northern Illinois, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Ohio, Kent State, Illinois State, and Campbell.

Nolan is a four-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 89.38 right now.

Cam Buffington

A 6-foot-3, 220-pound linebacker with a 40″ vertical, Cam Buffington is small-town star looking to making it big at Iowa. Buffington verbally committed on July 26, 2021 before his sophomore year of high school at Winfield-Mt. Union. As a junior this past season, he finished the year with 95.5 tackles, six tackles for loss, one sack, and three pick sixes on defense along with 1,484 yards rushing, 264 yards receiving, and 31 touchdowns on offense.

Buffington is a three-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 88.87 right now.

Joseph Anderson

A 6-foot-5, 210-pound track star that qualified for state in the 110 meter hurdles, long jump, and triple jump, St. Louis native Joseph Anderson has tremendous upside as a defensive end prospect. Anderson, who had 54 tackles and six sacks as a junior, verbally committed to Iowa on July 3, 2023, choosing the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Nebraska, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Iowa State, Vanderbilt, Wyoming, Army, Ball State, Miami-OH, and Bowling Green, among others.

Anderson is a three-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 88.64 right now.

Drew Campbell

A 6-foot-4, 225-pound defensive end, Drew Campbell is going to play at the University of Iowa like his older brother, Jack Campbell, who was an All-American for the Hawkeyes. Campbell verbally committed on April 1, 2023, choosing Iowa over scholarship offers from Iowa State, Kansas State, and Northern Iowa. A disruptive defensive end with the ability to wreck a game, Campbell had 52 tackles, 20 TFL, and nine sacks for Cedar Falls during his junior season.

Campbell is a three-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 87.66 right now.

Bodey McCaslin

A 6-foot-5, 270-pound offensive tackle, Bodey McCaslin is a prospect with a high upside that shows tremendous potential on film. He verbally committed to Iowa on May 3, 2023, choosing the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Penn State, Kansas State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Missouri, Purdue, Colorado, Kansas, Vanderbilt, Syracuse, Ball State, Western Michigan, and Old Dominion.

McCaslin is a three-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 87.66 right now.

Chima Chineke

A 6-foot-5, 240-pound prospect from Texas, Chima Chineke looks like a great fit for Iowa on the defensive line under the tutelage of Kelvin Bell. Showing great length and versatility, Chineke racked up 35 tackles and 6.5 sacks last season as a junior at Plano East High School. He verbally committed to Iowa on July 19, 2023, choosing the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Texas Tech, Kansas, Vanderbilt, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Houston, Memphis, and Tulsa, among others.

Chineke is a three-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 87.48 right now.

James Resar

A 6-foot-4, 204-pound quarterback with great track speed, James Resar is quite an intriguing prospect for the Hawkeyes. The Jacksonville, FL native verbally committed on September 11, 2022, choosing Iowa over scholarship offers from Indiana, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Toledo, and Georgia Southern. Since then, he has also added an offer from North Carolina as well. Resar, who ran 10.67 in the 100-meter dash this spring, finished his junior season 127/211 passing for 1,992 yards with 16 touchdowns and six interceptions and had 496 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns on the ground for Bishop Kenny High School.

Resar is a three-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 87.31 right now.

Brevin Doll

A 6-foot-0, 185-pound running back with great track speed, Brevin Doll is going to bring a lot of versatility and playmaking ability to the Iowa backfield. Doll, who has won back-to-back state titles in the 200-meter dash, racked up 2,681 all-purpose yards and 35 touchdowns as a junior at ADM High School. He verbally committed on April 16, 2023, choosing Iowa over scholarship offers from Iowa State, Minnesota, Purdue, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Army, Western Michigan, Princeton, Northern Iowa, and South Dakota.

Doll is a three-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 87.02 right now.

Reece Vander Zee

A 6-foot-5, 190-pound multisport star in high school, Reece Vander Zee has the size that Iowa has been looking for outside at the X wide receiver position. As a junior, he had 32 catches for 768 yards and 10 touchdowns for Class 2A state champion Central Lyon/George-Little Rock and will be joining high school teammates in Zach Lutmer and Graham Eben at Iowa next year. Vander Zee verbally committed to the Hawkeyes on June 27, 2023, choosing Iowa over scholarship offers from Iowa State, Nebraska, Northern Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Air Force, South Dakota State, Montana State, UNI, Furman, and Yale.

Vander Zee is a three-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 86.34 right now.

Xavier Williams

A 6-foot-0, 225-pound running back, Xavier Williams looks like a great fit for Iowa’s offense. As a junior, the Indiana native rushed for 1,475 yards and 15 touchdowns for Lake Central High School, showing a good blend of power and quickness. Williams verbally committed on April 15, 2023, choosing the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Northern Illinois, Kent State, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Ball State, Bowling Green, Toledo, Miami-OH, and Old Dominion.

Williams is a three-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 86.34 right now.

Gavin Hoffman

A 6-foot-5, 220-pound tight end with a 4.56 forty and 40″ vertical, tight end Gavin Hoffman brings elite athleticism to the position. Hoffman, who had 39 catches for 713 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior, verbally committed to Iowa on June 27, 2023, choosing the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Missouri, Nebraska, Arizona State, Auburn, Tennessee, Arkansas, Illinois, Purdue, Texas Tech, and Marshall, among others.

Hoffman is a three-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 86.14 right now.

Preston Ries

A 6-foot-2, 195-pound star in multiple sports at Monticello, Preston Ries is a future Hawkeye linebacker. Ries verbally committed on May 7, 2022, choosing Iowa over scholarship offers from Iowa State and Nebraska. As a junior, he had an impressive season on both sides of the ball, finishing the season with 2,543 yards passing, 1,421 yards rushing, and 41 touchdowns on offense and 65 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, and one interception on defense.

Ries is a three-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 85.90 right now.

KJ Parker

A versatile 5-foot-11, 165-pound wide receiver, Illinois native KJ Parker is going to play wide receiver for the Hawkeyes. A true playmaker in high school, he finished his junior season with 37 catches for 1,082 yards and 17 touchdowns at IC Catholic Prep in Elmhurst, IL, where one of his coaches is former Hawkeye Matt Bowen. Parker verbally committed to Iowa on June 29, 2023, choosing the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Cincinnati, Wisconsin, Iowa State, Marshall, Northern Illinois, Miami-OH, Western Michigan, Toledo, Buffalo, and Ohio, among others.

Parker is a three-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 85.64 right now.

Jaylen Watson

A 5-foot-11, 175-pound playmaker on both sides of the ball, Toledo Central Catholic prep Jaylen Watson is headed to the University of Iowa to play cornerback. Watson, who ran a 4.47 forty at Iowa’s camp, verbally committed on July 8, 2023, choosing the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Minnesota, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Maryland, Louisville, Marshall, Miami-OH, Toledo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Bowling Green, Kent State, and Liberty.

Watson is a three-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 85.29.

Devan Kennedy

A 6-foot-3, 240-pound defensive end with a 7-foot wingspan, Devan Kennedy is just beginning to tap the surface after playing football for the first time his junior year of high school. Kennedy, whose father Jimmy Kennedy played at Penn State before becoming a first-round draft pick by the Rams in 2003, committed to Iowa on June 26, 2003, choosing the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Penn State, Illinois, Oregon State, UTEP, Idaho, Bowling Green, Fordham, and Northern Arizona.

Kennedy is a three-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 85.11 right now.

Josh Janowski

A 6-foot-2, 275-pound interior offensive lineman, Josh Janowski looks the part of a future Hawkeye. On film, he is absolutely dominant inside and plays with a mean streak all the way through the whistle for Lincoln-Way East High School. The Illinois native verbally committed on January 30, 2023, choosing Iowa over scholarship offers from Ball State, Bowling Green, Miami-OH, and Toledo.

Janowski is a three-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 84.94 right now.

Michael Burt

A 6-foot-6, 226-pound tight end that excels as both a receiver and blocker at Creighton Prep High School, Michael Burt seems like a perfect fit for the Hawkeyes. The Omaha native, who is a three-sport athlete with high upside, verbally committed to Iowa on June 22, 2023, choosing the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Miami-OH, Northern Illinois, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Northern Iowa, and Southeast Missouri State.

Burt is a three-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 84.91 right now.

Rashad Godfrey

A 6-foot-2, 185-pound prospect with the ability to play cornerback or safety, Florida native Rashad Godfrey should be a great fit for Iowa’s defense under Phil Parker. Godfrey verbally committed to Iowa on July 5, 2023, choosing the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Boston College, Duke, South Florida, Tulane, Coastal Carolina, Charlotte, Connecticut, Liberty, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, and Western Michigan, among others.

Godfrey is a three-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 84.74 right now.
