The Iowa men’s basketball roster continues to evolve. Just a few days after adding a big man who was at Drake last year, the Hawkeyes have seen one of their recent portal commitments jump ship at the last minute.

Ashton Williamson, a 6-foot-3 guard previously at Florida International, had committed to Iowa on May 21st. With the Hawkeye players set to report this weekend to Iowa City and begin workouts as a team on Monday, Williamson and Iowa have mutually agreed to part ways. This news was first reported by the Des Moines Register on Thursday afternoon.

This drops Iowa to 11 scholarship players on the roster and in our podcast on Wednesday with assistant coach Josh Sash, he indicated that Iowa had room to add more players to the team.

“I don’t think we are (done),” he said. “I think we are still open to bringing in one or two more (players). I think one for sure and that’s where we are right now. With what we have left, I think we probably have enough money for one or two. I guess we will see how that all plays out.”

Iowa will have a couple of options and one of them is to evaluate the players who will be arriving this weekend and watch a week of workouts to assess what their needs on this team might be because that might not be what they currently think.

“We have some flexibility. Maybe right now we might think we need another big man or a guard. This time maybe after seeing our team for a week, you might not have to think, but probably know exactly what you need. If we do need to add something I think we will have a clear picture at that point,” Sash said.
