For whatever reason, Maryland Field Hockey has the Hawkeyes number when the game is not played in Iowa City. Coming into today, Iowa was 1-9 all-time against the Terps away from Grant Field. Last season’s matchup went to overtime and with both teams ranked in the top ten this year, the expectation was that it would be another game that went down to the wire. That ended up not being the case. Maryland scored two goals in the first ten minutes of the game and forced Iowa play from behind the whole night. The Terps addeded two second half goals and took down the #5 Hawkeyes 4-1 in College Park.

Maryland put the Hawkeyes on their heels and in a tough spot on the road right out of the gates. The Terps earned a penalty corner just 94 seconds into the game and converted it for a goal off of the stick of midfielder Sammy Popper. Maura Verleg took the insert and handed it off to Josie Hollamon who eventually passed it back to Popper. Her shot was low and hard at the left side of the goal and GK Mia Magnotta could not get to it. The Hawkeyes found themselves trailing just 1:39 into the game.

The Terps doubled their lead in the tenth minute. Midfielder Hannah Boss forced an Iowa turnover and took it into the circle herself, where she sent a backhand shot into the goal. Before either team could settle into the flow of the game it was already 2-0.

As bad as the first ten minutes were for the Hawkeyes, getting outshot 4-0, they earned the next eight shots of the game, as well as three penalty corners. However, just one of those eight shots were on target. The Maryland defense, ranked first in the Big Ten in lowest % of shots allowed on target, was able to force the Hawkeyes into tough looks.

Late in the third quarter, in the 44th minute, the Terrapins converted again on the penalty corner. The intial shot on the corner from Hope Rose was saved by GK Mia Magnotta, but the rebound came out to defender Nathalie Fiechter and she found the back of the cage for her first goal of the season. That made the Terps lead 3-0 going into the fourth quarter.

For the Hawkeyes, the final 15 minutes started the best way it possibly could have, with a goal just 37 seconds in on a penalty corner. Dionne van Aalsum sent a shot towards the goal and it found the stick of Annika Herbine, who directed it into the goal. That gave the Hawkeyes life with 14:23 to play. Unfortunately, it was short lived.

30 seconds after the restart, it was Hannah Boss that sent a pass into the circle. The pass was deflected up into the air and chaos ensued in front of the goal. The ball eventually found its way back to Boss and she sent a backhand shot into the goal for her second of the game. Just 39 seconds after Iowa cut into the Maryland lead, it was back to a three-goal advantage. The Terps finished off the last 14 minutes and change for the 4-1 victory.

The Hawkeyes finished with a 13-12 advantage in shots, but just five of their 13 (38.5%) were on target. Meanwhile, Maryland put nine of their 12 (75.0%) of their shots on target. Iowa earned six penalty corners to Maryland’s four.

Up Next, the Hawkeyes travel to State College for a matchup against the 16th ranked Penn State Nittany Lions on Sunday. The game is set to begin at 11:00am CT and will be streamed on BTN+.
