Iowa Field Hockey Practice/Northwestern Exhibition Photo Gallery
Iowa Field Hockey is back for their 48th season and the Hawkeyes are looking to make a run to the Final Four the 13th time in program history. Head coach Lisa Cellucci and select players met with the media before practice on Friday morning to preview the season. Media members were allowed to stay and view practice.
Today, the Hawkeyes got on the field for one final exhibition game against the Northwestern Wildcats, before the season begins next week against Wake Forest in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. True freshman Rachel Herbine scored an early goal off an assist from Esme Gibson to put Iowa in front. Northwestern tied the game in the second quarter on a penalty corner, but the Hawkeyes retook the lead early in the fourth quarter on a goal from true freshman Dionne van Aalsum. Lieve Schalk added a goal late in the game on a penalty corner to give Iowa the 3-1 exhibition win.
Last season, Iowa got off to an 8-1 start, including a win over #1 Northwestern in Evanston, but a 3-7 finish to the season had them sneaking into the 18-team NCAA Tournament field. The Hawkeyes took down #5 Virginia in a penalty shootout in the First Round, but saw their season end in the Elite Eight in a penalty shootout against #3 Northwestern.
