#6 Iowa Field Hockey shuts out Indiana in Bloomington
The Hawkeyes dominated the Hoosiers on Friday afternoon at Deborah Tobias Field. Iowa dominated the run of play for the first 56 minutes, before Indiana was able to earn three corners and five shots late to make the stat sheet look a bit better. If it wasn’t for seven saves from goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge, the Hawkeyes would have won by four or five goals. Instead, Lisa Cellucci’s squad settled for a 2-0 victory to move to their record to 11-2 on the season. It is the sixth straight season that Iowa has won 11 or more games.
“Indiana played fantastic. They have great transition and their goalkeeper was unbelievable. We just really kept the pressure on and were able to get shot after shot and draw a lot of penalty corners,” said Lisa Cellucci. “That was the factor in the end, for us to be able to capitalize on those opportunities.”
The Hawkeyes put pressure on right away in the opening quarter of the game, but could not get any looks to find the back of the goal. After earning just one penalty corner last week against Northwestern, Iowa earned four penalty corners over the first 15 minutes. The Hoosiers defense was able to keep the game scoreless despite giving the Hawkeyes chances, but that changed in the second quarter.
In the 17th minute, Iowa broke through on their sixth penalty corner of the game. Milly Short received the insert from Annika Herbine and sent a shot by Loveridge for her first career goal to put the Hawkeyes in front.
The one-goal lead did not stop the Iowa offense from creating chances. Two penalty corners and three shots later, the Hawkeyes were awarded a chance to double their lead at the penalty spot. Dionne van Aalsum dribbled the ball from the right sideline, into the circle and was fouled by Indiana Meredith Lee.
Enter Hillary Cox. The Wilmette, Illinois native doesn’t play in every game, but when the Hawkeyes need someone to step up and convert from the penalty spot, the junior midfielder is nails. The shot from Cox went to the right corner, while Indiana GK Arabella Loveridge was caught guessing left. Hillary Cox is now 3/3 on penalty shots this season.
At halftime, the stats showed just how much Iowa dominated the first 30 minutes. Shots (13-1), shots on goal (7-1) and penalty corners (8-1) were strongly in favor of the Hawkeyes.

The action in the second half calmed down, but that was just fine for Lisa Cellucci, as her team had a two-goal advantage. The Hoosiers earned a penalty corner in the 41st minute, but GK Mia Magnotta made a big save on a shot from Sofia Arrebola Garcia.
Indiana was finally able to sustain an attack against the Iowa defense in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late. Over the final three minutes of the game, the Hoosiers earned three penalty corners and took five shots, but still did not get on the scoreboard. The clock ticked down and the Hawkeyes earned the 2-0 victory in Bloomington.
The final stats looked a bit closer than the play on the field indicated. Iowa finished with 16 shots, nine shots on goal and eight penalty corners, while Indiana finished with eight shots, five shots on goal and five penalty corners. The Hawkeyes have now won 13 of the last 14 meetings against the Hoosiers, dating back to 2011.
Up Next, the Hawkeyes face fifth-ranked Louisville on Sunday morning. The Cardinals come into the weekend with 12-1 record, including a six game winning streak. Sunday’s game is set for 11:00am CT on ACCNX.
