Hawkeyes hold off pesky Red Wolves
It was another Friday night basketball game for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Unlike last week when Iowa cruised to an easy win, Arkansas State proved to be a pesky opponent. Eventually the Hawkeyes pulled away for a hard-fought 88-74 win over the Red Wolves.
Iowa was led by Ben Krikke, who scored 25 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. With the win the Hawkeyes move to 3-1 on the season. Next up for Iowa will be a trip to San Diego to play in the first Rady’s Children’s Invitational. The Hawkeyes will face Oklahoma on Thanksgiving Day and then either USC or Seton Hall on Black Friday.
The Hawkeyes opened up the game in a positive manner, jumping out to a 7-0 lead thanks to strong play from Desonte Bowen, who scored five of the first seven points of the game. He finished with a career high 17 points and was an impressive 9-10 from the charity stripe.
Arkansas State then got hot from the floor and quickly cut the lead to 9-7 before Tony Perkins and Krikke had back to back scores for the Haweyes. Iowa looked like they were on their way in the first half when Josh Dix knocked down a three pointer from the wing to make it 27-18, but the Red Wolves would not go away.

A three point field goal by Freddy Hicks tied the game up at 36 in the first half. Hicks had 21 in the game to lead the Red Wolves. But, Iowa closed with a 13-3 run in the final 4:13 of the half to go to the break with a relatively comfortable ten point edge, 49-39.
Bowen started the second half with another traditional three point play and then Patrick McCaffery knocked down one of just two three pointers on the night and it looked like the Hawkeyes were about to open up a significant edge, pushing the lead to 55-39.
But, Arkansas State was a pesky bunch and kept hanging around. However, they could never cut deeply into Iowa’s lead, getting as close as nine twice and eight at one point before Iowa pulled away for the 14 point victory.
