In-state freshman Josiah Harrington attended Iowa's game on Sunday.

One of the top freshmen basketball players in the state of Iowa was at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday evening to watch the Hawkeyes wrap up their regular season against Illinois. That player was Josiah Harrington from North Scott High School.

Because he is a freshman, Harrington was not a guest of Iowa basketball. He was there with one of the assistant coaches for the Lancers as a fan, but also getting an up close look at Hawkeye basketball.

“I loved the environment and getting to see the game up close. The game was really physical and fast paced and it was good to watch,” Harrington said.

The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 13.3 points and shot 47% from three point range in his first year at the high school level. He helped lead North Scott to a 16-7 record. The Lancers saw their season end just short of making a trip to state, dropping a two point decision to Cedar Rapids Kennedy. In that game, Harrington scored a game high 23 points and was 5-9 from beyond the arch.

While Harrington was not there on a recruiting visit, he has been at Iowa game before and says he likes the style of play he sees from Fran McCaffery’s squad.

“I like the way that Iowa plays,” he said. “They play a style that I am comfortable playing. I wish the game would have gone better for them.”

Earlier this season, Harrington also made a trip to Ames to watch the Cyclones battle Kansas.

Harrington is a classic combo guard with a smooth stroke from beyond the arch, but he can also handle the ball and create for others, along with attacking the rim. Those skills will be back on display this spring when he plays for the Meanstreets AAU program out of the Chicago area in the Nike EYBL.

“It’s been fun playing with them and I look forward to playing with them again next month against the best players in the country.”
