2026 forward talks Iowa hoops offer
Growing up in the state of Iowa, if you play basketball at the high school level it’s a dream to get a scholarship offer from one of the Division One programs in the state. Recently Will Gerdes picked up a scholarship offer from a second in-state school, this time from the University of Iowa.
The 6-foot-8 forward from Cedar Falls, IA visited Iowa when the Hawkeyes played Indiana and prior to that contest he sat down with the Iowa coaches and extended a scholarship offer to the talented prospect in the Class of 2026.
“Picking up the offer was really cool,” Gerdes said. “I was kind of hoping and expecting to get it eventually since we have been down there quite a bit for visits, but it was very nice to finally get it and share that moment with my parents.”
The Hawkeyes have been recruiting Gerdes for quite some time. Iowa assistant coach Matt Gatens has been leading the charge and Gerdes says that he has developed a strong bond with him and his parents really like him as well. He also said that while they haven’t spent as much time with head coach Fran McCaffery, they have enjoyed their interactions with him as well.
One thing of note with Gerdes is that many in his family are Hawkeye fans, so it meant a lot to them to see him get this offer.

Gerdes said that his top three right now would probably be Iowa, Nebraska, and UNI.
“My top schools would be Iowa, Nebraska, and UNI. I would put UNI in there because they are so close to us and we have always been fans of their program since they are in Cedar Falls. Nebraska offered really early and we are really close with their coaching staff.”
There is no imminent plans for Gerdes to make his college choice. He plans on wrapping up his high school season at Cedar Falls. This season he is averaging 17.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game for the Tigers, who are 12-1 on the season.
After his high school season is completed, he will be playing AAU Basketball with the newly formed Murray Elite program (formerly Iowa Barnstormers). They will be playing on the Adidas AAU circuit.
“It’s really exciting to be part of the program that Keegan and Kris are starting. I hope I can meet them at some point and talk to them,” he said.
