Iowa Football ranked 25th in AP Poll
For the 28th time in the history of the Associated Press College Football Poll, Iowa opens the season ranked in the Top 25. The Hawkeyes come in ranked 25th according to the AP voters. Last year Iowa also opened the season ranked 25th in the poll and finished the season 24th in the poll of national voters.
Iowa is coming off a 10-4 season that included winning the Big Ten West in the final year of its existence. The Hawkeyes return nine starters on defense, led by All American linebacker Jay Higgins, and they have eight starters back on the offensive side of the ball.
The Hawkeyes have begun the season ranked in the Top 25 in five of the last six years. However, all five of those years have been at 18th or lower in the poll. This is the 11th time in the tenure of Kirk Ferentz that Iowa football has been ranked in the Top 25. Their highest preseason ranking was 9th in 2010. That is the only time the Hawkeyes have been ranked in the top ten to start the season under Ferentz.

The Big Ten is well represented in the AP Top 25. Ohio State is at #2. Oregon is at #3. Penn State comes in 8th and Michigan is 9th. USC comes in at 23rd and Washington, Nebraska, and Wisconsin received votes. Iowa is scheduled to play only one team in the Top 25, Ohio State. That game takes place in Columbus on October 5th.
