Report: Kelton Copeland out as WR Coach
Iowa is already looking for an offensive coordinator. Now they will also be looking to fill the position of wide receiver coach. On Friday afternoon, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Iowa would be making a change at their wide receiver coach and that Kelton Copeland would not be returning.
Earlier in the day, Copeland had removed all references to the Iowa football program from his Twitter/X profile. It had earlier read “Proud husband, father, and WR coach for the Iowa Hawkeyes Football #Hawkeyes #B1G. Now it just reads “Proud husband & father”.

Copeland joined the Iowa program in the 2017 after spending four years at Northern Illinois as their running backs coach and then wide receiver coach. During his time at Iowa he did coach some successful players. Ihmir Smith-Marsette is probably the most successful in terms of the NFL. He currently plays for the Carolina Panthers. He also coached Brandon Smith, Nico Ragaini, Tyrone Tracy Jr, Nick Easley, and Matt VandeBerg.
It’s unknown what direction Kirk Ferentz may go with this hire, but it could be tied to the new offensive coordinator that may be hired in the next week, per the timeline put out by Ferentz in late December. The Iowa players will be returning to campus from winter break on Tuesday with the start of classes in Iowa City.
