For the second time this season, Iowa built a lead and looked to be in control against Maryland. However, the Terps once again finished strong and this time they didn’t need late game heroics from Jahmir Young, as they pulled away for a 78-66 victory in College Park.

With the loss, Iowa falls to 14-11 overall and 6-8 in Big Ten play. Maryland is now also 14-11 overall and also 6-8 in conference games.

Maryland scored the first two points of the game, but then Iowa scored the next eight, including back to back three’s from Payton Sandfort. The junior wing led Iowa in scoring on Wednesday evening with 19 points. A third three from Sandfort pushed the Iowa lead to 13-4 and the Hawkeyes looked to be establishing control early on in the road game.

The Terps started to find their offense a bit and a putback by freshman guard Deshawn Harris-Smith pulled Maryland within three, 18-15. Harris-Smith came off the bench to post a career high in scoring of 17 points.

Iowa then went on an 8-0 run that featured a pair of freshman contributing. Ladji Dembele scored on a putback of his own shot and Pryce Sandort drilled a three and the Hawkeyes were suddenly up 26-15. Maryland then put on a run of their own, this time 11-2, and pulled within four after a Jahmir Young layup. The dynamic guard led all scorers in this game with 21 points.

The Hawkeyes did go into halftime on a high note thanks to a nifty drive by Patrick McCaffery for a 37-31 lead at the break.

In the second half, Iowa continued to hold on to their lead, keeping the game between 6 to 8 points before a Payton Sandfort push shot followed by a dunk by Owen Freeman put Iowa up 54-44 and the Terps had to call a timeout.

Brock Harding hit a floater. Harris-Smith responded with a three. Then Harding got a steal and layup to give Iowa a 58-50 lead. At that point, with 10:33 left in the game, it felt like Iowa was going to be able to respond to the push from Maryland.

But, the reality was Iowa scored just eight points the rest of the way. Meanwhile, Maryland scored 28, including a rapid 14-2 run that was keyed by Young, Julian Reese, and Donta Scott. In the second half, Iowa was just 1-9 from three and shot 37%. Meanwhile, Maryland shot 57% in the second half and made 21-26 from the charity stripe. Iowa went to the free throw line just six time after the break.

The Hawkeyes will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they host Wisconsin. Game time is set for 1:15 and it’s the annual Black Out game and it will be televised by the Big Ten Network.
