Terps rally past Hawkeyes
Iowa had kept Jahmir Young in check most of the game, but down the stretch the Maryland star scored 8 points in the final minutes, including the game winner as the Terps rallied to beat the Hawkeyes 69-67 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
With the loss, Iowa falls to 11-8 on the season and 3-5 in Big Ten play. Maryland moves to 12-8 overall and 4-5 in league play. The Hawkeyes were paced by Tony Perkins, who scored 20 points and 14 from Owen Freeman.
Iowa got off to a strong start against Maryland. After Donta Scott drained a three pointer to open the scoring, the Hawkeyes scored the next eight points before Scott scored again. Patrick McCaffery, who returned to action after missing time due to a sprained ankle, came off the bench to score on a drive to give Iowa a 13-7 edge. McCaffery then scored again on a jumper to keep the lead at six, 20-14.
A Ben Krikke bucket followed by a dunk by Freeman pushed the Iowa lead to ten, 24-14, and the Hawkeyes felt like they were in control of the game. Freeman scored eight straight points for Iowa in that stretch to keep Iowa’s lead at nine, 30-21.
Scott scored the first bucket of the game and the last of the first half to make it 34-28 at the break. Iowa came out strong to start the second half. A Josh Dix three gave Iowa a nine point edge and then a layup by Krikke gave the Hawkeyes their largest lead of the night at 39-28.

Then the Hawkeyes started to go cold from the floor. Maryland outscored Iowa 11-4 and took the lead on a putback by Julian Reese to make it 46-45. Reese finished with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Perkins kept the back and forth scoring going with a three pointer and then a floater by Brock Harding and a tip-in by Freeman gave Iowa a 52-50 edge.
The Hawkeye lead grew to seven at 61-54 after a jumper by Payton Sandfort, but Iowa failed to make a field goal the last 5:44 of the game and only scored six free throws down the stretch of the contest. Meanwhile, Young, who finished with a game high 22 points, hit a back to back three pointers and then won the game with a drive to the left and a layup with 1.5 seconds left.
Iowa’s last second heave by Sandfort fell short and the Hawkeyes let one against away on Wednesday night. The Hawkeyes will be back in action this Saturday when they travel to Michigan for a game that begins at 4 p.m.
