Utah State powers past Iowa
The Iowa men’s basketball team hit the road to Kansas City on Friday night and the result was not a good one. Utah State pulled away down the stretch for a 77-69 victory over the Hawkeyes.
One bright spot for the Hawkeyes was point guard Brock Harding. He scored a career high 19 points and dished out 5 assists in the defeat. Owen Freeman chipped in with 18 points. With the defeat, Iowa falls to 5-1 on the season.
The story of this game was simple, Iowa didn’t shoot well from three point range, were beaten soundly on the glass, and gave up too many second chance points. Iowa shot just 19% from beyond the arch and it was a particularly tough night for Payton Sandfort, who was 1-13 from deep. The Hawkeyes lost the rebounding battle by 16 in this game and lost the second chance points battle 24-12.
Iowa did start pretty well in this one. After falling behind 9-4 early on, a layup by Freeman and a three by Drew Thelwell tied the game at 11. Feeman was dominating around the rim. He scored back to back buckets for a 15-14 edge and an old fashioned three point play by Josh Dix gave Iowa a 17-14 lead.
After falling behind 22-21, Thelwell scored and Sandfort knocked down his only three of the night and the Hawkeyes were up 26-22. The game went back and forth until Iowa closed the half on a 9-4 run to capture a 37-33 lead at the break.

Early in the second half Iowa built a six point edge after a drive by Sandfort, but then the Aggies went on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 43. Harding kept Iowa in the game at that point with a pair of triples and a jumper to put the Hawkeyes on top 51-49. Sandfort followed with a layup to give the Hawkeyes what was their final lead of the night, 53-49.
From there, Utah State went on a 9-0 run, capped by an Ian Martinez three to push the lead to 58-53. Iowa cut the lead to one after a pair of free throws from Sandfort and two after a short shot by Freeman, but a couple of easy runout scores ended any hopes of a rally for the Hawkeyes.
Iowa will be back in action on Tuesday evening when they host USC Upstate at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Game time is 7 pm and will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
