After taking down Iowa State for the 19th straight year at Hilton Coliseum on Sunday, the Iowa men’s wrestling went on the road to face a Penn Quakers squad that received votes in the latest NWCA Coaches Poll. Penn made a late run at The Palestra in Philadelphia, but the Hawkeyes were able to win the final two matches to pull out a 22-13 dual win. Iowa has now won six straight duals dating back to last season.

“We are tight, and every point we score is hard,” said head coach Tom Brands. “We gotta figure out a way to make it a little easier. Like a hot knife through butter.”

The night got off to a good start, with #15 Drake Ayala earned his third ranked win of the season over #19 Max Gallagher at 125 lbs. The Hawkeyes opted to go with redshirt freshman Jace Rhodes at 133 and #13 Michael Colaiocco picked up the shutout decision victory to even the score after two matches.

The Hawkeyes went on to win the next four matches to open up a 16-3 lead in the dual. #1 Real Woods earned a ranked win over #11 CJ Composto at 141, as did #2 Jared Franek over #26 Jude Swisher at 157. #6 Michael Caliendo picked up a major decision win over Lucas Revano at 165 to put the Hawkeyes in firm control, but the Quakers worked their way back to give themselves a shot at an upset.

At 174 lbs, #10 Nick Incontera got the rally started for Penn with a major decision over #14 Patrick Kennedy, who was wrestling in just his second match of the season. #32 Maximus Hale followed that up with a pin of Aiden Riggans at 184 and all the sudden it was 16-13 heading into the final two matches of the night. Luckily, at 197, #22 Zach Glazier was up to the challenge and took down #26 Martin Cosgrove via decision to clinch an Iowa victory for the second straight dual. Redshirt freshman Bradley Hill defeated Cole Ubas via decision in the final match of the night to give the Hawkeyes a 22-13 victory.

On the season, the Hawkeyes are 4-0 with dual wins over California Baptist (40-0), #15 Oregon State (25-11), #8 Iowa State (18-14) and #27 Penn (22-13). Iowa has five duals remaining against ranked teams, with an additional four duals left against teams that are receiving votes in the NWCA Coaches Poll.
