After having to postpone their game with Northwestern earlier this week due to health and safety issues related to Covid within their program, the Hawkeyes and the Wildcats have agreed to reschedule the contest for January 31st.

The game will be played at Carver-Hawkeye Arena as scheduled with an 8 p.m. start time and it will air on the Big Ten Network. Iowa will still honor the life and legacy of former Hawkeye Chris Street, who tragically died in an auto accident on January 19, 1993.

Ironically, January 31, 1993 was the date of Iowa’s first home game following the passing of Street. The Hawkeyes played Michigan that day and beat the Fab Five squad led by Jalen Rose, Chris Webber, and now current Wolverine head coach Juwan Howard. Iowa won that game 88-80 and following the game, Iowa head coach Tom Davis presented Street’s parents, Mike and Patti, with the game ball on the court.

The date certainly fits in the Hawkeyes schedule rather comfortably. Iowa will head to Columbus to face Ohio State on Saturday at 1 pm. Then they travel to Michigan State on the 26th and will then host Rutgers on the 29th.  The next game on the schedule would have been February 4th against Illinois. Incidentally that contest was announced as a sellout on Wednesday afternoon.

The importance for Iowa was that the game being played on the 31st means it was sliding in between two home games, so travel is not a factor.

For Northwestern, they are already postponing another game on their schedule. The Wildcats were supposed to play Wisconsin this Saturday, but Badger head coach Greg Gard indicated after their game this week that it appeared the game would not be played as scheduled. He said he might be played Sunday or have to be completely rescheduled.

The game on the Wildcat schedule also fits rather nicely for them. They have a home game against Minnesota on the 28th and then a home game on February 2nd against Michigan. So the game on the 31st and the relatively short trip from Evanston fits nicely in their schedule.
